Use of offshore tax haven In 2015 there was considerable controversy about her benefiting, to the tune of £1.5 million, from assets repatriated from a Liechtenstein family trust in 2011 using the Liechtenstein disclosure facility, that reduced penalties and removed the risk of prosecution for Britons moving undeclared assets back to the UK. Coverage focused on the apparent hypocrisy in her condemnation of the use of tax havens. The Times reported that 75% of the shares in the family trust had previously been held in Panama, which Hodge had previously criticised for its financial secrecy and use as a tax haven. Hodge issued a statement that she had always fully declared the shareholding, never had a management role in the company, and had received assurances that the company always paid the appropriate tax.

The whole point of Bluesky is for it to be safe and welcoming to all users. I think the issue is some people are defining their identity by opposition to others and how well they can harass others and deny their existence. Bluesky may not be the right place for them.”

But analysts at TD Bank reckon credit card programmes drive on average 40 to 60 per cent of department stores’ operating profit. At Macy’s, revenue from credit cards made up less than 3 per cent of sales last year — yet they contributed 62 per cent of group operating profit, up from 53 per cent in 2023. At Kohl’s, the figures are even more dramatic: without its flexible friends, the company would have posted an operating loss.

Scrutinising his trading history, Paul Downes KC, representing Evolution, referenced several news stories, one of which described Gagliardi’s trading activity as being conducted in a “grey area”. Gagliardi dismissed their relevance, stating that “these are just journalists” and their job involved oversimplifications “like when I explain it to my mum in Queens”. In its original filings and throughout the trial, Evolution described Gagliardi as an “abrasive” employee who breached risk limits on several occasions. Evolution argued that this was another reason it was able to deny his bonus, although it did not dismiss him at the time of the alleged offences. In written arguments prepared for the High Court trial that concluded in October, Gagliardi’s lawyers said that, following several disagreements, he asked Lerch if he could be made co-chief investment officer in September 2021. When his request was denied, Zoltan Varga, a former executive at hedge fund Och-Ziff Capital Management and “a key investor” in Evolution, asked Lerch whether he could offer Gagliardi another title. Lerch proposed his own title for Gagliardi: “Fuck face”. Gagliardi also claimed that a month later, when Lerch was discussing with colleagues the possibility of the equity capital markets trader leaving Evolution, he commented that if he did, he “would learn the meaning of discretionary very fast”, referring to the disputed discretionary bonus.
