we’re not about to get any kind of robust consumer protection around AI any time soon (unless states step up), it is effectively the wild west with this shit, so this is something I have been sincerely asking. i don’t have any answers, i feel at a loss personally.

so like…who is helping the older people navigate what is probably the most toxic information environment we’ve known in our lifetimes? we are at rock fucking bottom for trust across the board - scams abound, AI slop is ubiquitous - kids and seniors are most vulnerable. honestly, we all are!

before anyone says it: yes I have encouraged them to pay for journalism by actual journalists and well…I haven’t succeeded! to them it’s worth navigating the disinformation minefield in order to get their rare morsels of news for “free.” not great! but - I imagine - not uncommon.

I still think about that all the time. BUT it’s a tie with this one: when I was saying goodbye at the end of the semester to Doug Muzzio, probably my favorite professor in grad school, he shook my hand, smiled at me and said: “you’re a pisser, Awad. I like you.”
