Aww he looks so good <3

THREAD.

3 years ago, with no warning, a brilliant orange farm cat wandered over from the draughty barn where he had been living, in rural Cornwall, and decided he wanted to live with us instead.

We decided to call him Jim.

This is the first photo I took of him, on that night: December 1st, 2022.

I am passionate about this because my father in law almost died from HPV-related throat cancer. He had about an 80% chance of dying from it. He got lucky. Many people do not.

Vaccines give us the opportunity to avoid suffering and dying in so many ways. They are modern miracles. Get them

If you are an adult under 45 in the US who never received the vaccine, you are also eligible for it. (You can also get it if you’re older, but insurance might not cover it). HPV is a very common infection, but it’s not inevitable. Let’s wipe it out!

This is wonderful news, and also means it’s time for me to beat the drum I always do when HPV vaccines make the news:

They are not only for women! HPV also causes penile, anal, and head and neck cancers. The latter are particularly deadly. Please vaccinate ALL your children.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

I’m wheezing
Some of his Q&As sound vaguely familiar, but before today I don't think the name Isaac Chotiner would have rung any bells for me. The torrent of posts today led me to read some of this.

Happy St Katherine's Day to all scholars, librarians, and Katherines. May you win an argument against an annoying man today, in the true spirit of Katherine herself.

Just now learning about this Frieran angle thing, looked at a couple examples, squinted really hard, and eventually said “jesusfuck”. Anyway, mad respect to the folks who ground through learning to do that technique - I know just barely enough to know I can’t actually understand how hard it is
The Frieran angle thing is so great because *every* artist knows that angle is tough. They've all been through it, learning the hard way how to do it.

To a non-artist it doesn't seem like a hard problem. A non-artist who only wants to be seen as an artist, will use genAI instead of learning it.

I love this photo. This is a very cute fox and I'm impressed with anything that lives at very high altitude.

But I have seen this exact pose and look in a litterbox.

🤭
😳Meet the Tibetan fox (Vulpes ferrilata), which is distinguished by its characteristic flattened face. This species can be found in parts of Asia, including China, India, and Nepal—and has been observed at elevations of up to 17,388 ft (5,300 m).

Sabine is SO MAD. I picked up her front legs and held her hostage and KISSED HER LITTLE HEAD.

She's been angrily grooming herself for five minutes now.

(But she didn't hit me!)

At one point @alchemy-tits.bsky.social used an app to confirm I was registering tones I shouldn’t have been able to detect from construction equipment about a half mile away, because she couldn’t hear anything at all. I live in my AirPods because being around other people is a shitshow of noise
I apparently have the toxic combination of superb hearing (I can still hear those tones supposedly only teens can hear) and a chronically neurotic personality

I did do this, yes

in my defense, it was incredibly funny

I was directing a production of Much Ado in college where the costume director and I gave everyone goofy costumes for the masquerade scene. she was still in the wrath stage of the breakup, and I support women, so rip Josh’s dignity
FYI: your lore extends into the Woodinville area each time I explain to my student how you shouldn’t let your director hire your ex as costume designer on a show that includes a costume party. Unless you want to end up in a Speedo and water wings in front of the majority of the incoming class. Epic

1st incident lasted 25s during the 9PM news on WGN-TV in Chicago; The 2nd, 2hrs later, lasted ~90s on PBS affiliate WTTW during Dr. Who.

When I worked at a bookstore, I quickly learned that people cannot tell the difference between Xmas music and any Baroque or Elizabethan music album that doesn't get too organ-ish. I used this to my advantage.

One customer caught on... AND THANKED ME
If we had to hear “Baby Shark” everywhere we went for two whole months out of the year we’d throw a fit, right?

And rightfully so.

So tell me, why do we put up with it when the song is “Frosty the Snowman”?
