In their eyes, the U.S. is no different from any third-world country—the only difference is its people. Apart from being a sociologically and historically preposterous position, it's a yet further example of how nativism both requires, and is powered by, contempt for one's own country.

Which is why it was a huge mistake to reelect this guy, but that message didn't break through so here we are.

My question is: Is this just an incredibly unlucky one-off? Or does this administration have hush-hush deals with these “third location” deportation countries, to force people like this woman back into the countries from which they’d fled?

Because the cruelty is the point.
