Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) La barberia dels maleïts i dels elegits (The Barbershop of the Damned and the Chosen), 1950 oil on canvas 97 x 130 cm Together with a great number of works from this period, La barberia dels maleïts i dels elegits (The Barbershop of the Damned and the Chosen, 1950) anticipates the matter paintings in other aspects. In this particular case, we see that the human figure has been partially represented, revealing only one part of the body, corresponding to the left arm and shoulder. This makes these limbs acquire the appearance of votive offerings, a quality that was to be intensified in his work in the mid sixties in canvases such as Matèria en forma de peu (Matter in the Form of a Foot, 1965), and which he was to repeat in different forms throughout his career. This votive offering character is related to the desire on the part of Tàpies that his works should communicate something on not only the psychological but also on the physical level. It is as if, by the mere act of seeing or touching a painting, the observer should receive certain influences which would have positive repercussions on his vision of the world or on his human condition. Antoni Tàpies was a Catalan painter who became one of the most famous European artists of his generation. In the 50's he was part of the group Dau al Set that had strong ties to Surrealism. and was influenced by Ernst, Klee and Miró.

Ellen Harding Baker (1847-1886) was a US astronomer and teacher, known for her Solar System Quilt, used as a teaching aid in her lectures on astronomy.
She likely began creating the Solar System Quilt in 1876, and it apparently took her until 1883 to complete the project.

A black and white portrait of a young white woman looking back at the camera with calm eyes. The quilt has a wool top embellished with wool-fabric applique, wool braid, and wool and silk embroidery. The design of the quilt resembles the illustrations found in astronomy books of that time period. The quilt shows the Sun at the center and the eight planets of the Solar System (with indicated orbits around the Sun), as well as the asteroid belt. The myriad of stars that exist beyond the Solar System are also shown. The Galilean moons of Jupiter, as well as moons of Earth, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus are included, as are Saturn's rings. The upper left of the quilt shows a large comet, which is likely C/1874 H1, discovered in 1874 by Jérôme Eugène Coggia.
