I was 12 and a huge Patriots fan. Snuck into the TV room to watch the end of the game after my parent went to sleep. Have retained a crystal clear memory of it and my confusion as to why someone would shoot John Lennon. It's my "where were you when JFK was assassinated moment" alongside Challenger.

This just speaks to the Dems failures to use their most effective power right now – the bully pulpit – and a failure to recognize that they need to lay the groundwork for reform ahead of time, educating the public and getting the media to treat it as a big and generally expanding the overton window
