Personal account.
On 1 December 1991 Ukraine had a nationwide referendum on its independence.
There was a singe question: Do you confirm the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine? Yes/No.
More than 90% of Ukrainians voted "Yes", all the regions supported Independence - the highest ever support & turnout.

It's 90 years since famous thought experiment with cat by Erwin Schrödinger, aimed to show quantum superposition.

Very sadly, Ukrainians experience a similar experiment for real due to russian war of aggression - no one knows what, whom & when russia will destroy/kill next.

This is exactly how russia acts - committing genocide on any territory it occupies. That's absolutely no surprise at all. That's why russia must be defeated and held accuntable for its crimes. This is absolutely necessary for a stable peace in Europe & realistic to achieve with unity + joint effort.

Statistics on russian attack on Ukraine last night:
596 UCAVs
5 Kinzhal misssiles
23 cruise missiles X101/Iskander-K
4 ballistic missiles Iskander-M
4 air-launched cruise missiles X59/69

That is why air defence is so crucial for Ukraine (last night UAF managed to shoot down 577 targets).

Here is a bit of personal reflection on being an international researcher on scholarship:
1) the difference between stipend in Ukraine and Germany ca. 10 years ago was ca. 15x, so you can focus on science, have your basic needs met and even help relatives - an absolute luxury unaffordable before.
However, I do not expect that "people will not be willing to work under these bad conditions". The reason is simple - German academia relies very much on international researchers, and a significant number of them comes from places where the conditions for scientists are [often significantly] worse.

This is the unfortunate reality in German academia. Most scholars have to drop out, but usually they are not welcome in other places. If you're an international researcher (this is my case), the situation is even more tough & options for employment outside of science are very [extremely] limited.
German academia: great place to work? You should think twice before giving it a try: Permanent positions are very rare, most scholars have to drop out after some precarious years. @dianakwon.bsky.social has written a great piece about this for @nature.com and also talked to yours truly. #IchBinHanna

Kaum jemand darüber, was wir verlieren könnten.

This week I attended Systematikdagarna 2025 in Stockholm where presented a part of my work on how genomic data could contribute to resolving difficult cases in plant taxonomy. It was a very nice meeting with many exciting talks and conversations with colleagues.

Russia launched a drone & missile attack on Kyiv last night. Combined attacks were also directed against Odesa, Chernihiv & Zhytomyr regions.

In Kyiv: 7 killed, 21 injured, incl 1 child.

Once again, Kyiv residents- men, women, children, and animals - sheltered in the Kyiv metro.

I don't use LLMs either. And it's important to kepp in mind that LLMs aren't a source of credible information.
For lots of reasons, I don’t like LLMs and I don’t use them, but I know there are serious people working on ways to meaningfully incorporate them into education and I don’t doubt there are ways to do that productively. It’s probably obvious that “Have the LLM tell you the answer” isn’t one of them.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Last night Russia sent about five hundred drones and missiles to kill Ukrainians. Most were intercepted but those that got through hit a post office, a store, a power plant, and multiple residences. 19 people were killed in Ternopil. (1/2)
