Sometimes, there are the usual feelings of “omg they didn’t …” but, well. Maybe it’s courage compared to much of NC’s delegation.

It was 7-8 trucks and about 20 agents at Our Bridge this morning. Sure feels retaliatory, aimed at families, in my opinion.

This morning, at about 10 am, 7-8 trucks and more than 20 agents arrived at our East Site. ICE/CBP's presence at ourBRIDGE had only one goal: instill fear, sending a message to us, our families, and to Charlotte's immigrant community. What happened today was unnecessary, unacceptable and another direct attack on the safety of our community. These actions by ICE, DHS & CBP do not keep ANYONE in Charlotte safe. We will respond calmly and effectively. We have made the decision to cancel all on-site programming until further notice. Even though our on-site programs are paused, ourBRIDGE IS STILL HERE. We will shift 100% of our resources and people-power to ensure that families have the resources they need at home. We will also be working to make sure every immigrant in Charlotte learns their rights by heart and knows where to report and how to ask for help.

Not long from now Donald Trump's Border Patrol surge will roll out of Charlotte to take its terror to another city. It will leave behind destroyed lives and fractured communities, but it will have accomplished very little that meaningfully addresses our nation's immigration issues. We suspect that never was really the goal. What is? Perhaps the president is still hoping immigration can bring him a political win as his approval numbers head lower than even his worst first term levels. Maybe he's hoping for a distraction from the relentless drip of Jeffrey Epstein and economic headlines. None of which is happening. None of which will likely happen. Not because of Charlotte. In fact, just two days in, Operation Charlotte's Web already has failed. With every unnecessarily smashed window, every sneer at due process, every federal agent's smirk at those who are horrified by it all, Donald Trump continues to lose. He loses because this immigration enforcement surge is not really about immigration. If the president really wanted to solve our nation's border issues, he would work toward broader solutions instead of rounding up whomever he can to hit a big number to show Americans. • The Editorial Board

In September, I argued that Democrats needed to embrace what I saw as a pre-Trump strength of the G.O.P.—namely, an ability to build broad coalitions by cultivating a diffuseness of spirit and allowing politicians with different electorates to appeal to those differences. It's at least worth considering the possibility that the end of the Democrats' shutdown firewall, rather than reflecting a troubling lack of unity or disgraceful capitulation, is evidence of that spirit in action.i Strictly speaking, the Democrats didn't vote to end the shutdown. Two handfuls of them did. Many others were very angry about it. There's a world in which both these positions-and their constituencies—can coexist.

The recent Charlotte election results showed that the fear/crime message didn’t work even in a traditional R city council district.
Still, it’s good for more people to know that the fear/crime thing is a political tool for the next year, at least.

But even from a strictly political perspective, the letter doesn't really make sense. Public safety isn't a winning issue for Republicans in Charlotte - at least not right now. At first, it seemed like concerns about safety might give this year's GOP candidates a rare boost in the state's largest city. But voters reelected the mayor and all four city council at-large members by comfortable margins in what was the highest turnout for an odd-numbered election year in at least a decade. In Charlotte City Council District 6, Democrat Kimberly Owens easily defeated Republican Krista Bokhari, becoming the first Democrat to ever represent that seat. Bokhari's campaign was heavily centered around crime and safety, and she was supportive of sending the National Guard to Charlotte.

Ironically, none of the congressmen who signed the letter represent uptown Charlotte, and only one of them represents Mecklenburg County at all. The 9th Congressional District, which is represented by Harris, includes a southeastern portion of the county. But Harrigan's district doesn't come closer than Lincoln County, while Edwards and his western North Carolina district are three counties away. If you're a voter in any of these districts, you're probably wondering: "Why is my congressman spending time on this instead of what's affecting my community?"
