I'm a history professor at Middle Georgia State University. I hold a PhD in medieval studies and post entirely too much about my cats and hobbies.

All opinions are my own and do not reflect those of my employer.
Into year 11 of, "Have you tried turning your Anglophonie off and on again?"

My balding forty-nine-year-old self is deeply pleased by this.

Wait, does Hot Topic... still exist...?!

Yeah the whole "Health insurance whose coverage is identical to OHIP but private and rolled into your tuition and fees" thing struck me as weird until I learned it was an artifact of a Foreigners Leeching Off Our Tax Dollars panic.

And I get why "guy who strained his adductor over-training" has different needs than "guy who was hit by a car," but I found it vexing because I was on a grad student stipend (and been told that Canadian Medicare is what makes the country morally superior).

(6/6) Colo-rectal issues.

Docs tend to be conservative on both sides of the border, but Canadians moreso. No, I promise you do not want the details.

All told, Canadian docs work under a paradigm of somewhat greater scarcity.

(5/n) Prescription orthotics:

Honestly not much of a difference? (Had supplemental grad student union insurance that covered orthotics, but OHIP didn't, so actually Blue Cross / Blue Shield beats OHIP in that respect.)

(cont'd.)

(4/n) ER for, "Did I actually break my ankle?"

Only difference is that American hospitals charge a co-pay.

(Cont'd, but not for a little while.)
November 28, 2025 at 4:23 PM
(3/n) Imaging soft tissue:

Both: other options first.

Canada: ultrasound

US: MRI

Physical therapy:

US: "Ugh, I hate having to meet deductibles."

Canada: "What the hell do you mean OHIP doesn't cover this?! You Canucks have been claiming moral superiority on health care my whole life!" Cont'd

(2/n) Soft tissue injury, initial visit:

Canada: docs will ask questions, palpate, test range of movement.

US: docs will always open a visit to the sports medicine clinic with an xray, but also question, palpate, check range of motion.

(Cont'd...)

Whole lotta right-wing thoughtfluencers on X The Everything App are saying that akshually The Italians were a huge problem and the 1920 immigration act was necessary.

Yes. I read this and *immediately* started drafting a horror short about the archeologist who finds out what exactly the memetic contagion that caused this was...

But the question is why the killings were both unified and heavily ritualistic. A rancher shoots his neighbor, it's easy enough to infer, "I've had it with that fucker grazing his livestock on my land." But if he crucifies him head-down...

AIUI, no, that was what brought the whole thing to its gory conclusion.

You wonder what the lead-up was. How'd you have a spread out relatively homogeneous culture and then grotesque genocide? Was there some resentment building? Or maybe something ideological or religious? And then afterwards just broad swaths of empty land.

I mean, its very existence proves the value of CanCon regulations...
