#Historian, #football enthusiast and participating observer. Lecturer in Modern European History. Opinions here strictly my own!
Also wait until some explains to them that the actual indigenous people of England looked like Cheddar Man (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheddar...). It will blow their mind...

More wholesome #gardening content. I finally managed to harvest my #courgettes. One got just really (I mean REALLY) big. Any recommendations for batch-cooking recipes for courgettes are very welcome!

My forthcoming book on the #history of #authoritarianism and #dictatorships in modern #Germany now has a cover. Sadly, it seems to have a very timely relevance. It will be out on 22 January 2026 for the very affordable price (at least for an academic book) of £20.

In Schröder we trust! Go Team #Germany... first Euro title in 30 years is up for grabs tonight.

Why did I just have to think of this cartoon from 1939 right now?

Busy days ahead! Just received the proofs for my next book, which will be out in January 2026. It's written for a broad audience and covers a very timely topic. The best thing is that it will be released as an affordable paperback edition straightaway! #history #skystorians #book #germany

Little addition to the #vinyl collection. Probably among the top 10 pop albums ever made imho.

I spent most of the last few days going through the proofs of my new book (share.google/zjDj8zgp0xHW...). This bit from the manuscript reminded me just how much autocrats and dictators are usually just grafters and charlatans (current ones included).

Yeah... sounds like a cheap-ish 1950s horror series...

Here's some wholesome #gardening content. I harvested the first of the fresh #radishes today, and they are delicious! Due to the sun in the last few weeks, I'll have a bumper crop this year. There's nothing better than some dark bread with butter and some sliced radishes.

It was a real pleasure to listen to my colleague @jamescrossland.bsky.social talking about the enigmatic British spy Robert Bruce Lockhart this afternoon. Great questions from the audience! #haconf25 @ljmuofficial.bsky.social

I am super-excited to give this paper on Saturday at this year's @histassoc.bsky.social conference in #Liverpool. If you happen to be around, come along! If you follow online, tune in at 3pm! #haconf25

Fun fact: Harry Pollit, who led this campaign, was the only Englishman to get his own poststamp in the Soviet Union.

#Skystorians and #Germanist peeps... how would you translate the phrase "Stunde der Bewährung" here? "Hour of probation" just sounds wrong to me...

Went for some more exotic #groundhopping on Friday. Flint Mountain FC in the second #Welsh division. Handcounted 50-ish home supporters plus (at least) 5 groundhoppers. The home team got an early lead but then conceded quite a few. 1-5 was the final score. Did I mention that there was a castle?

Some decent football this Saturday afternoon in Crosby. @afcliverpool.bsky.social unfortunately got a proper thrashing by @wdcfc.bsky.social. Kudos to the West Didsbury supporters for their chants. It was a quite enjoyable match.

To mark the publication of my new #book, I thought I treat myself to a new #record. Classic album and a nice addition to my #vinyl collection. Btw, the book can ordered here: academic.oup.com/book/59699

Greetings from #Newcastle (where I am attending a conference). I actually wanted to take a photo of the Tyne Bridge, but I sat on the wrong side of the train. Still, what a gorgeous Northumbrian sunset!

Winston Churchill in the garden of the White House in 1942. He didn't even bother to wear a suit. (Did he even own one?!?l
