Over the weekend, a friend found a dollar bill with the following inscription: "Given to Will on 6-7-79 by nice o'l [sic] man in grocery store for being cute."

It's a super duper long shot, but does anyone know this incident back in 79? Probably not, but ...

Redbud and forsythia and weeny little garden sprouts! And grocery-store leftover mint that is rooting, and re-growing green onion shoots from the store!
The redbud that shades my screened back porch (aka a catio). I didn't know what it was and kept trying to kill it, thinking it a trash tree, but an arborist set me straight. Now its shade makes my back porch usable in summer, AND it is a native plant! Forsythia in the back corner of the yard, behind the volunteer turkey fig tree. I love the cheerful flowers! Re-growing green onions! I started the ones on the right two weeks ago, and just used the ones on the left the other day. Soon the ones on the right will move to the kitchen garden bed. I needed mint for a recipe and didn't have any, so I bought some. After I used what I needed, I had leftovers. Mint is invasive as all get out and roots in water or soil. I dipped the roots in rooting powder for extra oomph, and planted them in the empty catio planter. I *want* them to overtake it!

Cartoon by Theodor Geisl (AKA "Dr. Seuss"), from 1941. It shows a kangaroo hopping through a landscape. The kangaroo is labeled, "America First." In its pocket are three joeys, labeled "Nazis," "Fascists," and "Communists." The kangaroo says, "Relatives? Now...Just three fellers going along for the ride!" (It is interesting that Geisl includes Communists with Nazis and Fascists, as the latter two were overtly and violently opposed to the former. Geisl was anti-Stalinist but not anti-Communist, and fought against antisemitism, bigotry, and in particular HUAC, the House Un-American Activities Committee. He did NOT oppose the internment of Japanese American citizens and legitimate immigrants during WWII, and his early work (esp. "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street") contains demeaning and stereotypical depictions of Asians. He later visited Japan and reassessed his own prejudices. "The Sneeches" was specifically created in the wake of WWII and the immediate context of the Civil Rights movement. We can't just whitewash Seuss as "a man of his time," and ignore his more problematic depictions. But we can look at the general sociocultural limitations shared at the time. In that context, Geisl was liberal, and he remained open-minded enough to confront and reassess some of his own prejudices. In other words, past attitudes are messy, and nobody is "pure" in their ideas. In 100 years someone will reassess what most of us are sharing, and show us in as messy an ideological and racial context: making progress in some ways, but not in others. For his time, Geisl was working for good, however imperfectly. We have to recognize and name that imperfection (remember -- effect. I may not intend to trip someone, but if I did, that person still hit the ground hard, and I have to own that and make sure I don't do it again!). At the same time, we can't throw away the good parts of a legacy. (It's hard to figure out the line!)

What have I done today? 1) Taken Wilbur, my foster dog, for a sniffari, 2) Admired a lovely way to re-use orange peels to feed birds, 3) Watched with utter horror as Vance and Trump behaved like petulant bullies in the Oval Office, 4) fought back panic and utter rage 5) Graded student work.
Pine tree in a park in which someone has hung three bird feeders. The feeders are made out half an orange peel each. There are two thin wooden skewers stuck through each peel at right angles to each other (though if I were making them, I would blunt the sharp end of each skewer). Each feeder was filled with bird seed, and suspended from the tree's branches by compostable gardening twine. There are three feeders in this picture; each tree along this side of the park has several feeders suspended from its branches.

Midweek Mags and Libbet with their new third-hand cat tree. (I have now removed the old sisal and applied fresh. Unfortunately, now they don't want to scratch on it as much. Ungrateful little beasts :) :) :) )
Two cats on a well-scratched multilevel cat tree. One, the black and tan mackerel tabby, sits up on her haunches and scratches at the corner of the first level, while a grey ghost tabby exits the covered lurking spot on that level. The cats are looking at each other, and one can imagine each of them saying, "Hey, did you see / smell / scratch THIS yet?"

#TinyJoys My plum and redbud trees are budding out, and even my Fuyu persimmon is starting to green and swell.
The redbud in my back yard beginning to blossom. This tree shades my back screened-in porch (aka the catio) and makes it a pleasant place to sit for both me and my two ladies. The plum tree in front of my front door beginning to bud. Its plums are always lovely and sweet-tart when they ripen, and I watch for the tree to start to come back to life each February. I share the fruits with neighbors, and make lots of plum clafoutis, but then pit, slice, and dehydrate the rest to nosh on all summer and fall. The Fuyu persimmon tree in the front of my house, just beginning to swell and green a little. This tree is 20 years old, and it still fruits faithfully every year. I slice and dehydrate its persimmons every October, and munch on them throughout the winter.
