American beech tree golden leaves during late autumn stand out because most other deciduous trees have dropped their leaves. Why do Beech trees keep theirs? Scientists have several theories about this survival tactic. the leaves protect new leaf buds from browsing deer or moose. The intact leaves protect the tree from harsh weather. This marcescent behavior helps to conserve energy. As I have walked in the woodlands, I have noticed other trees such as some oaks where leaves were intact on the lower branches.
