Opera. Classical music. Cultural history. The state of the arts today.

Completely agree. (Tbh have never even heard of Staffordshire University.)

How to tackle this, I wonder? Most of my books and academic articles were on that list you could check to see if META had learnt from them.

Yes well suffice to say I don't live in Oxford. And actually, is it that desirable? There's one lovely suburb (hence the high demands) but you might be surprised to see other areas. It has very poor quality housing stock and some rough areas.

The market is the market. We've got no choice. You can't roll up and say "look, I'll offer you half" - you'd just be laughed at. Most houses in the nice bits of Oxford are now off limits even for dual-income professional families. Most live out of town and commute in.

By newbuild I don't even mean now, I just mean a block, fairly uninspiring, built c. 2005 or 2010.

I've just looked up what you can get for that in Oxford and it's not all the height of luxury. One currently listed property, for instance, is a three-bed flat in a newbuild block (albeit in a nice part of town). Nice enough but not a mansion.

ALL copies have to come from America by the way. I knew the editors were over there but I didn't realise music books are all printed there and apparently can't be printed here. :/

But I hope to goodness that other back orders will be fulfilled in this shipment. It is also becoming available to order again, albeit perhaps only temporarily (then a reprint). It's been very upsetting! Hope yours comes very soon.

Hopefully you will receive your copy very soon now. A large shipment arrived by air at the end of last week and I have received a flurry of updates from people yesterday and today saying their copies have arrived. They may have ordered from OUP direct. /

Everyone has been at the mercy of the publisher, alas... Anyway, I hope there are plenty of copies here now.

Aaargh. I don't know why this would have happened as there are definitely copies in the country that @prestomusic.bsky.social should be able to access.

Thank you.

That is good (though I prefer face to face appointments to calls). At my surgery they insist you see the same GP every time which is a pain because she is hardly ever available and tbh I am not that keen on her and would rather see someone else!

Thank you. I hope that your copy is in the batch that has just arrived in the UK. Someone told me that their copy arrived this morning so hopefully all back orders will now be despatched pronto!
November 24, 2025 at 4:01 PM
I have also heard that someone who ordered the book direct from OUP and been waiting has received their copy today. Hopefully all of the backorders are now being fulfilled or will be very soon. Thanks to all of you for your patience!
