It's a composite specimen, combining elements of 2 birds belonging to different species. At some point in the 19th c. an unknown taxidermist glued the central tail feathers of a ♀️(?) Amazonian Motmot (𝘔𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘢) on the back of an adult ♂️ Amazonian White-tailed Trogon (𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘴). (2/5)

This mounted bird with its striking tail feathers from the #KULeuven Zoology Museum recently caused quite a few raised eyebrows as it turned out to be “not a real bird” (1/5)

Academic staff involved as curators / collection managers have contributed in many ways, but their knowledge abt the collections is in danger of being lost once they retire. With these interviews, we hope to document their knowledge & create awareness abt the importance of the collections.
