This little book was sitting on the free books pile in the office amid German texts and old editions of the Longman Reader. Ngl, the page on messing up kind of goes hard if you tend to beat yourself up like I do.
American Girl book: “Dance!” If you do mess up, keep going. If you fall, pick yourself up and get back into the routine. In the same way that you have to move on with the steps, move on with your thoughts.

I enjoy reading my lit students' annotations and seeing what they're thinking as they take in a text, but sometimes, I also get to learn new slang.
Today's gen Z word of the day is "glazing," which means giving excessive praise (though Urban Dictionary has a more colorful way of putting it).
Per Merriam Webster -- glaze: to praise excessively What does glaze mean? To glaze someone or something is to shower them with excessive praise. Additionally, both glaze and glazing are used as nouns to refer to an act of glazing (giving someone excessive praise).

My conference paper "Imaginary Friend or Foe? Examining the Pitfalls of an AI Writing Partner" is finally published in the CEA Critic! In it, I tackle some of the problematic assumptions about AI and discuss why LLMs may be counterproductive for writing pedagogy. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...
Abstract The writing classroom has been dramatically affected by the introduction of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. Facing immense pressure to adapt to a challenging and changing educational landscape, some writing instructors have chosen to adopt LLMs as a teaching tool. However, perceiving this technology as a potential "partner" in the writing process involves various problematic assumptions about chatbot capabilities. For one, it requires a certain degree of confidence in LLMs, which are incapable of understanding information and produce output conforming to the Frankfurtian definition of "bullshit." While some scholars have suggested chatbot interactions may still be educational in a fictional capacity, this argument presumes that students understand the limits of AI veracity, and it is inconsistent with the way LLMs are actively marketed as trustworthy personas, despite their tendency to "hallucinate." Given the current abundance of misleading AI hype and marketing, this essay argues that using LLMs in the writing classroom may be counterproductive to students' development as writers and thinkers. As such, writing educators are invited to challenge the popular narrative of AI techno-determinism and embrace their power to steer this technology's course in higher education.

A new cafe just opened in FTM, & at first, I was impressed. It’s hands down the prettiest cafe in town and expensively furnished. Then I noticed the TV screens promoting evangelical missions to South America, and I found this on their website.
What happened to the separation of church and coffee?

Teaching Zadie Smith's short story "Meet the President" (which takes place in a techno-dystopia) hits different in the age of AI. I highly recommend it for those wanting to tackle conversations about the role of technology in our world in their literature classes.
Excerpt from "Meet the President" by Zadie Smith: Not for the first time the boy was struck by the great human mysteries of this world. He was almost fifteen, almost a man, and the great human mysteries of this world were striking him with satisfying regularity, as was correct for his stage of development. (From the Pathways Global Institute prospectus: “As our students reach tenth grade they begin to gain insight into the great human mysteries of this world, and a special sympathy for locals, the poor, ideologues, and all those who have chosen to limit their own human capital in ways that it can be difficult at times for us to comprehend.”) From the age of six months, when he was first enrolled in the school, he had hit every mark that Pathways expected of its pupils—walking, talking, divesting, monetizing, programming, augmenting—and so it was all the more shocking to find himself face-to-face with an almost nine-year-old so absolutely blind, so lost, so developmentally debased. “This”—he indicated Felixstowe, from the beach with its turd castings and broken piers, to the empty-shell buildings and useless flood walls, up to the hill where his father hoped to expect him—“is nowhere.
