"They say our tree may never grow back, but one day, something will."
Nobody is uniquely, alone, THE Mr Fox. We're all, together, wild animals who can outwit and outlast those who want us gone, and we'll all eat and dance as they sit grumbling, guns pointed at the hole we've long abandoned. (end)

And that's also why I can't help but see the ending as positive, if not in the thrilling "the enemy is soundly defeated and everyone can go home again way," but in a more realistic way.

Throughout the movie he wants to be the one and only great Mr. Fox. He considers himself cleverer than all the other animals, only involving Kylie more as a lacky and his nephew because he is wildly impressed by his raw talent.
The turning point comes when they all team up to save his son. (3)

This is one reason why some say the ending is a downer. But it got me thinking about the message of the movie as I've always understood it and how applicable it is to today's times.
The turning point in the story isn't Mr. Fox giving up his thieving, as one might expect in this allegory. (2)
