Mgmt claim we need these destructive cuts to "save" >£90M and avoid a possible future financial deficit. They refuse to explain (to the joint unions or to Scottish Parliament) how such a situation could have arisen at one of the UK's wealthiest universities, with £3bn in reserves at last reporting.

In my experience (9+ years there) there was always a divisive, secretive company culture around pay + contracts, & an unspoken threat that workers shouldn't rock the boat because we were all replaceable; last week they said that part out loud. Those of us who cared were brave and unionised anyway.

right?!? public libraries, museums and presumably schools can manage this, but not a university where the students pay thousands in fees and also rents out half the buildings as fringe venues... 🫠

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... (sorry for bbc); for more on the cuts see www.ucuedinburgh.org.uk/blog/8gaanhy...
obviously those two things have two different kinds of disastrous impacts, but it's just incomprehensible to assert that they can't scrape together the funds for some sanitary towels. mate
Cuts Could Kill Our University — UCU Edinburgh
University management is courting a death spiral, where cuts in the name of sustainability actually undermine that which they are meant to save.

Joshua I'm kind of embarrassed to say this so publicly but do you umm... do you know if the questioner is thinking of it as a word for food, or for oral sex? (bc I believe the latter usage may be more bri'ish)

OVE was pioneering work by Prof Gunnar Fant (1919-2009 z'l'), what a star, more about him here ncvs.org/hall-of-fame...
(and I should've capitalised it because it is an abbreviation in this case, for Orator Verbis Electris 🤖 but is also a regular Swedish name!)
