Today at 2 and tomorrow at 12, these two panels take place at @apsa.bsky.social. The papers are so intriguing that I finished reading them pre-arrival! 😱 @leoahrens.bsky.social & me also present. Including work on the class biases in pledge breaking

2/3) Center-right stagnation in changing circumstances along with the moderation of some far-right parties has made it difficult to distinguish both "camps" - echoing work by @dziblatt.bsky.social or @casmudde.bsky.social de.bsky.social. The weaponization of equal rights does not differ much either.

1/3) 📣Out in Party Politics:
We trace the equal rights and economic equality positions of 69 center-right and far-right parties since 1970 in 12 countries. We find that center right parties did not react to/address equal rights concerns and economic inequality

Join us 🕐 11.20 @ #EPSA2025 for great papers on the „Politics of inequality and representation“! @leoahrens.bsky.social and me show how even egalitarian governments shy away from real redistribution and focus on less invasive and risky policies.

… have forsaken the once complementary link between economic equality and equal rights in favor of a weak trade-off (start ca. 2000, Fig.2). Complementarities and trade-offs depend on party family and period, so we caution against sweeping claims.

In Social progress at the expense of economic equality? we ask if equal rights or equal chances concerns crowded out economic equality as priority of the Left? Mapping equality concepts 1970-2020: not green or far-left parties. Yet, social democrats … 1/2

It was during Erasmus 2007/08 at Uni Gothenburg that I first considered doing a PhD (seeing Bo Rothstein etc.) - so it was great to be back and present current work on policies with @leoahrens.bsky.social from voe-project.org. Thanks for the invite Mikael Persson!

Die Linke is still prioritizing economic equality and still talks about east-west (unlike SPD + Grüne). SPD deemphasised economic equality, but started to reemphasise it. While the Greens prioritise equal rights over economic equality, they have (except 2013) always done that, so not a trend either.

Did German left parties abandon economic equality in favor of equal rights, as the diagnosis of the "Lifestyle-Left" suggests? Analyzing party programs since 1970, we caution against sweeping claims in Unequal German Democracy (open access). 3 key qualifications👇

Is rising inequality unstoppable?
No! @poppublicsphere.bsky.social we analyze decades of inconclusive research and show that government partisanship matters, but only under certain conditions. Party effects are 7x likelier with specific study designs—and predictably so🎯

Papers submitted for APSA - in time! Irritating, but I blame this on @matthiasenggist.bsky.social & @leoahrens.bsky.social (also, thanks to @juliusk.bsky.social for help and very usefull feedback).

After a tough R&R, we published a paper that won the Best article prize at Socio-Economic Review. Awesome! In a way it fits the way publication processes go that they tag the wrong Alex. There is a Prof that gets my citations, this guy gets the prizes, I write the papers 🤝😆
