Doing another one of those redraws, seven years apart.

I am not super proud of the final product, but super proud of the progress

Also, little WIP personal piece I'm chipping at:

Then you just add details.

So in short: Boxes rule, spheres can go be round somewhere else. If you're starting out on your drawing journey and struggling with specific angles, try giving your underdraft more structure, it will make things much easier.

Whenever you can't see the jawline, the contour of the face will follow the connection between the chin/teeth cylinder, and the mass of the cheeks. You can play around with the shape of the cheeks in order to build different head/face shapes:
November 19, 2025 at 4:16 AM
Then, we need to be aware of 2 major components of head construction:

1. the chin/teeth: It works as a thin cylinder going up towards the center of the face.

2. the cheekbones/cheeks: I always use the cheeks as a way to emphasize emotion and "fleshiness" in facial expressions
November 19, 2025 at 4:16 AM
Instead, I suggest emphasizing the planes of the head during the sketch, so that you know where the "edge" of the face lies.

(As a general rule I always recommend using boxes over curved shapes when sketching):

Unless you're quite practiced in drawing the head already, so you don't need that many landmarks, the temptation is to follow the curve of the mask, and that's how you arrive at the cursed jawline:
November 19, 2025 at 4:16 AM
In other words: we want to draw "a face" instead of building one.

The amount of circles and curves gives us an easy way to get from a blank page to "head" but it gives us no information on the structure of the face itself.

It basically becomes a flat mask wrapped around the sphere of the skull:

We all know the basics to simplifying the head: Circle, temples, central axis

So far so good

The problem being, while this method is really useful for front and side views, it simplifies the structure of the face to the point where it becomes almost iconographic.

So, I'm not the best at doing tutorials (she says about to try anyways) but I tried the infamous Frieren angle, and came up with a couple tips for people struggling with these kinds of shots:

Another favourite warmup of mine:

Just do a shit ton of boxes. Go wild with it, make them snake around the page. It will build so much more confidence in your sense of space and volume.

A little #sketch to feel like I still got some art done while feeling sick as hell.
