In the 1960s Latin American leftists were utterly convinced that they could overturn the corrupt regimes that governed their societies. In their hubris they gave authoritarians the tools to justify horrific atrocities. They never understood that their revolution was not broadly popular.

When you have a regime that clearly wants violence, will precipitate violence to impose martial law, you need a strategy that sucks the oxygen from that strategy. Non compliance comes in many forms, and my friends, the No Kings protests aren't going to help. They don't meet the present moment.
June 12, 2025 at 2:05 PM
Saturday's protests are a trap. the regime wants violence, and so do the Proud Boys and their ilk. It will not matter that they are overwhelmingly peaceful. A few highly motivated fascists will create the violence that the regime needs to justify mobilizing more troops. This is just the beginning.

Pete, looking across the desk, the sweat is dripping down his face. "Sir, I am sorry to bother you, but you mentioned a pardon when I sent in the marines...."
Don, a smile on his face, "Pete, you drink, right? I hate drunks, my brother was a drunk, died young, left a mess, no self control that guy."

Among the things that astound me about this particular moment, is that it is the first time I have seen this kind of seizure of power in the absense of any kind of actual armed conflict. Moscow may have been a false flag, but there was a war in Chechnya. Fujimori was at war with Sendero.

NYC would actually be a much better place if some of those rich people decamped for somewhere else. It goes against conventional (economist) wisdom, but look where conventional wisdom has taken us. Poor and middle class people make interesting and livable cities, rich people ruin them.
