this would definitely explain why despite being the most active method for listening to music there's actually very low activity if you check the streaming charts. at some point everyone became fatigued and now only boot up streaming for holidays and maybe a new Taylor Swift album

I think Ed's ballads deserve a lot more love. I like the pop stuff just fine but Ed has a compassion and love for that kind of songwriting that puts him well over the artists who desperately try to be him (lowkey part of why Play didn't work for me as well as his other albums).

Like I keep thinking of when Oscars discourse fired up over Ryan Gosling getting nominated but not Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig, which people claimed goes against the whole point of the movie. Except "men get everything over women" was not the point of the movie.

Yeah, but I feel like it fits into what you described in that a lot of people understood there was something behind it but never really grappled with the complicated gender dynamics of the movie and instead latched onto the aesthetics and "girl power" feminism.

now I'm being reminded of the Barbie movie which had a lot of things to say about gender dynamics and the negative influence of patriarchy on women AND men yet it seems the only thing people took away from it is making "girlypop" a personality trait and wearing pink is trendy.
