AFP statement on Pentagon press acess:

Agence France-Presse (AFP) cannot sign up to the terms of the Pentagon document that would require media to acknowledge insufficiently clear new policies that appear to fly in the face of US constitutional principles and of the basic tenets of journalism. We would urge the Pentagon to reconsider applying this new policy. The proposed new restrictions in the document the Pentagon wants media to sign are antithetical to the basic principles of newsgathering and reporting and undercut First Amendment rights. They place unnecessary constraints on reporters doing their jobs and create confusion between the responsibilities of Pentagon officials and those of journalists covering the Pentagon. AFP cannot sign up to a policy that asks reporters to potentially put aside their duty to provide independent and impartial reporting of such an important American institution as the Pentagon. We shall continue to cover the Pentagon and the US military freely and fairly, as we have done for decades.
