I ventured into the hills yesterday for the first time in far too long. It was bright and dry but bitterly cold in the wind (around -13°C). We were heading to the top of Auchnafree Hill.

A waterfall tumbles down a mountainside below a fording point on an access road. Grass and heather is growing here with a few stunted trees higher up the slopes. Snow covers the upper slopes of the Ben Lawers range a little further to the north-west. Ben Chonzie to the left of shot also has a dusting. Skies are blue and the grass and heather are browns and yellows. My walking buddy strides into the distance along an estate track with the Ben Lawers group ahead of him capped in snow. They are over 1,000 feet higher than the hill we were heading to. A cairn catches the sun during a break in the clouds. The air temperature was just below freezing but a brisk wind made it feel much colder. Skies are blue and some snow-capped mountains are visible in the distance below gathering cloud.

Another walk home after work, another batch of photos taken on the way (wide-angled edition!).

I did venture up Calton Hill but it was too windy. A few of the rides in the market were closed.

Another shot taken during my solo photo walk around Leith last night. I had no tripod with me so I placed my camera on a railing for this one and used the self timer to activate the shutter. (50mm f/11 for 4s @ ISO 800)

I was at some friends' #wedding in #EastLothian at the weekend as a guest but I took my camera along anyway, steering well clear of the pros while I did so - they've got a tough enough job as it is without me getting in the way!

Nerves are beginning to show as some last-minute preparations are made before the wedding ceremony. I grabbed this image of the beautiful bride posing for the pro photgrapher (out of shot) with a couple of her relatives after the ceremony. Although bright and dry, the wind was really gusting on Saturday which made the day feel quite chilly for August. The bride and groom pictured just after they tied the knot. The bride is carrying a bouquet of bright flowers and has a well-deserved cocktail in her other hand. The groom also has a cocktail (mostly out of shot) as well as a bright floral decoration on his lapel.

A sumptuous staircase in the Gaudi-designed Palau Guell in Barcelona. A thick red and gold carpet runs over stone stairs held in place by metal stair rods. A line of columns to the left of the image. An quiet, atmospheric passageway within Palau Guell in Barcelona - a lesser-visited Gaudi residence. The vaulted ceiling in Palau Guell which (at a guess) was around 30 feet above floor level which itself was already a couple of storeys above ground level. This was a particularly stunning room. Some brightly coloured mosaic tiling on the roof terrace of Palau Guell. Definitely worth the visit and much, much quieter (and far less expensive) than the more famous Gaudi houses: Casa Batllo or La Pedrera (Casa Mila).

My wife and me are cycling the Canal du Midi in Southern France this week. Today we're in Toulouse and we will reach Sète on the Mediterranean coast on Saturday, all being well.

I've been neglecting my account recently. Work has been crazily busy due to a very experienced colleague retiring (good for him!). Things are calming down a little now so, hopefully, I'll get back out with my camera again soon. I'm off to Copenhagen for a week on Thursday so the ideal opportunity!

I went out on my bike early this morning so I caught the sun rising over East Lothian from Portobello beach.

The beach was busy with walkers, cyclists and open water swimmers.
