Had a lovely weekend and while MICE was a lot busier(and HOTTER) than I anticipated, I really enjoyed meeting @keezyyoung.bsky.social, @alexandragallant.com, @mattielubchansky.com, and so many other artists and writers! I ended up with several books for myself and the kid, plus a couple gifts.

WOW the fluff is totally different! He's BEAUTIFUL. I love a cream color like that with a grey and pink muzzle. Have I ever shown you my (aesthetically) favorite horse? Buckskin shire. She's a broodmare in Florida I came across once.

In Boston for MICE and this is the biggest hotel room I've ever had in Boston!! 😂
The anteroom which has a coat closet and leads to the bathroom and sitting room The sitting room with a sofa, ottoman/padded coffee table, media table, and alcove with a desk. There's a large window behind the sofa. Frosted glass French doors leading into the bedroom, a king sized bed with plenty of room around it and a window to the right The view out over the Charles River into Cambridge over a black roof several stories below me. The sky is baby blue with soft wispy clouds.

Got the kid up and on the bus for 7:30 and had my coffee and breakfast and then said, you know what. I'm getting back in bed. Emrhys agrees. He likes to climb up me with his front legs, and then do BIG STRETCH and collapse. And then immediately crash 😂

I'm still thinking about "Horse" by Geraldine Brooks, but this section on a Civil War medic treating secessionist patients I had to take a photo of. Oof.
At first, he was kindly disposed to these men, young as they were, skinny, sometimes shoeless rural boys, most from farms too poor to to afford slaves. It had seemed to him an evil fate, a geographical accident, that had forced them to take up arms in what was, to him, a war to secure the rich man's wealth. Beyond what was strictly required for their care, he would talk to them, to better know their minds. But after a time, he had stopped seeking such dialogue. They were, all of them, lost to a narrative untethered to anything he recognized as true. Their mad conception of Mr. Lincoln as some kind of cloven-hoofed devil's scion, their complete disregard—denial—of the humanity of the enslaved, their fabulous notions of what evils the Federal government intended for them should their cause fail—all of it was ingrained so deep, beyond the reach of reasonable dialogue or evidence. Scott had become convinced that a total obliteration of their rebellion was the only way forward. And since the drift of things was strong in that direction, he would see it through to the end.

I obsessively listened to Hozier while doing all my thanksgiving prep and apparently it was A LOT OF REPLAYS. The rest of the list is very representative of my overall tastes, though usually in a different order.
A tidal music year in review list. The top artists I listened to are Hozier, the magnetic fields, Chappell Roan, eels, Radiohead, Florence + the machine, neutral milk hotel, Sparklehorse, Andrew Bird, and the Tallest Man On Earth.

Was playing bitechu bitechu with the puppy and thought I felt something stuck on one of his teeth so I pulled it and I PULLED ONE OF HIS TEETH OUT. Anyone want to see a nasty little puppy tooth

It's hollow and gross but not really bloody or gory

Heck yes. No complete failures, several delicious things, and lots of time with the fam. My grandpa liked the pie I made for him, my grandma, the first person I made bread with, approved of the rolls, bestie told me the cranberry sauce I gave her was the best she's ever had…I'm happy!

I may have gone overboard on the cranberry sauce this year. (Costco had giant bags of the Ocean Spray cranberries, which are both the best AND not an evil corporation.)
The largest sauce pot that comes in a set. I don't remember how big. Six quarts? Eight? Anyway it's big and has over two pounds of cranberries simmering away with diced oranges and golden raisins. Thankfully it freezes well.

Look at this sad fucking loaf that took THREE DAYS and didn't rise in the oven AT ALL. It's delicious and the texture is ATROCIOUS.

This is your yearly reminder that there's no real shortcut to caramelizing onions, and anyone who tells you they take under half an hour is a filthy liar. HOWEVER! One small help I've used for years now is adding water, covering the onions, and boil until they collapse. Save yourself ten minutes!

So yeah I may have installed the PR I filter a *wee* bit high, but it's still VERY CONVENIENT. Love stock time. Smells SO GOOD. Bonus pupper in his new jacket.

I shared my thanksgiving spreadsheet with my mom and my sister and had Matt check it to see if anything he wanted was missing, and now both my mom and Matt both made fun of me for putting turkey in the "other" column. The columns are in order of importance, though sides and veg are really tied.
Spreadsheet of food lists. The columns are PIES (coconut, cheesecake, pecan, mini pumpkin, chocolate, berry, pumpkin chiffon, cherry), VEG (green bean casserole, sweet potato, corn, peas, asparagus, Brussels, butternut squash), SIDES (rolls, cranberry sauce, stuffing, onion gravy, biscuits, turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, stuffed mushrooms), and OTHER (veg roast, wine, turkey).
