Quite right, albeit in parts of the country - GMP, London, North, South & West Yorkshire - the PCC already is de facto the deputy mayor. My sense is that this might herald some back-door mergers of forces where they can (relatively easily) be mapped onto new Combined Authority arrangements by 2028.

I have never been a fan of PCCs but there is no question that local democratic police accountability needed boosting when they were brought in. So the question now is how will the promised accountability to local police authorities and mayors be accomplished?
