Dear Journalists (and everyone),

Please, remember that we are in the "post-truth" era, and that "fact sheet" is a debatable description.

Hey science and scicomm folks! What are you doing now to promote trust in science and positive science messaging? How are you using scicomm for good in these challenging times? Looking for real ideas, not snark, no matter how much snark is fitting right now!

If we totally fix the threat to coral reefs from sunscreen chemicals, but do not address climate change, we are going to lose coral reefs.

If we totally fix climate change but do not address sunscreen, coral reefs will thrive.

Sunscreen is simply not that big of a threat to coral reefs.

I love apples...and climate change is impacting their production, particularly in Washington State. Alarming new study from my friend and colleague Deepti Singh.
🍎New paper on compounding climate risks to high-value tree fruit production in the U.S, led by graduate student Shawn Preston. We examine climate metrics specific to the phenology of apples 🍎 but findings are relevant for similar tree fruit.

Great All Things Considered story about hearing regeneration in #zebrafish! Great research by Ksenia Gnedeva at USC and her team. It's the last story, but all 3 are worth a listen. www.npr.org/2024/12/12/n...
This week in science: fish healing hearing, loneliness cures, and Conan the Bacterium
NPR's Ari Shapiro talks with Emily Kwong and Jessica Yung about hearing regeneration in fish and lizards, cures for the loneliness epidemic, and the secrets of a radiation-resistant microorganism.

Pineapple for the win! Who knew they had so many chromosomes? But fish are the real winners here due to the whole genome duplication during their evolution.
A list of the number of chromosomes of ten different organisms…

Fruit fly = 8
Housefly = 12
Snail = 24
Frog = 26
American badger = 32
Red fox = 34
Cat = 38
Dolphin = 44
Human = 46
Pineapple = 50

I just read this article in the @chronicle.com about how academia could deal with abusive mentors. The author suggests nuance; separating the person from the scholarship (where possible). Thoughts? For academics, how do your departments deal with problem mentors? www.chronicle.com/article/what...
