I've started doing something similar for fun. In this paper with a vector image I embedding a picture of my son with a balloon. It's faint but if you zoom in you can see it (you have to download the PDF). It's open access though.

yeah i think ultimately the rationalists were right to be afraid of reason, because they swam optimistically into the dark and promptly got devoured by an eldritch horror called scientific racism

My experiences at the MassDMV were generally good, but this is exceptional.
Was waiting at MassDMV. Woman ahead of me had two little kids with her. DMV worker whispered to the woman there was a warrant for her arrest, missed court appearance. Told her to just leave, she didn’t want to call DCF for the kids. “Call a lawyer and get it handled fast.”

You can be human.
tfw the immigration officer is crying too ...,

"We were saying, like, you know, ‘Is there any way for this not to happen? Because, you know, we've got the baby,’” she recalled. 'The USCIS supervisor was in tears herself because she's a mom and she said there was nothing that she could do.'"

growing problem for the dems is that their voters want progressive candidates but the party leadership generally doesn't. so there's no structure to identify and vet good progressive candidates until it's too late.
The noisiest Dem primary so far is probably Maine Senate, and here for instance I think it’s useful to see that despite all the bad publicity Platner still appears to be the favorite:

It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

these folks do good work
Hey folks: this morning we're launching a monthlong fundraiser for @techdirt.com. Over the last year, we've been steadfast in not self-censoring, not capitulating, not sanewashing bullshit. But that's come at a cost. And we need help: rtb.techdirt.com/products/fri...

Instead of picking an actor I really like I’d pick a really prolific actor who has been in lots of movies with other good actors. Someone like Kevin Bacon.
This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor

Here’s the thing: if you treat all soldiers as intrinsically war criminals, you rob the notion of “war crime” of any meaning. It’s all simply war - which is exactly how people who order war crimes want you to think.

I'm normally critical of @caseynewton.bsky.social and @kevinroose.com on the hardfork podcast, but I think it's good to point out when folks do well. I'd encourage everyone to listen to their interview of the Roblox CEO.

@404media.co did a really good series of articles about how all this works.
I had a popular account with a valuable audience and my Twitter payout was $80 a month-ish, to the point where I disabled monetization instead of uploading my ID. Payouts are only material if you live in a developing country, so “guy in Nigeria posting right-wing Amerislop” has taken over the site.
Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

So I wrote about how her comments highlight the ways both purity culture and rape culture sexualize young girls and make male desire their responsibility.
