This phrase is not used by medical professionals to describe abortions later in pregnancy. It has been co-opted by anti-choicers from the phrase "late-term pregnancy" (when GA is 41-42 weeks) to spread misinformation & stigma.

Yes! You can often request that your library purchase a book if they don't have it, or they can borrow it from another library that does! Talk to your local librarian and see what they can do. 📚

Shifting our language from “crisis pregnancy centre” to “unregulated pregnancy centre” allows us to more accurately communicate the harmful and misleading nature of these organizations. ✅

🚨 These organizations don’t need to follow health privacy laws, provincial healthcare legislation, requirements of the Canadian Medical Association, or medical best practices.

This includes the approximately 10% of UPCs that provide limited services like STI testing and ultrasound.

The word “crisis” implies these organizations can provide real help to people in desperate situations.

OTOH, the term “unregulated pregnancy centre” (UPC) captures the real problem with these places – they’re staffed mostly by untrained volunteers and therefore are not subject to regulation.

⏪ Historically we have used the term “Crisis Pregnancy Centre” to refer to anti-abortion organizations that disguise themselves as genuine sexual health clinics.

But lately, we feel that the phrase is not only outdated, but also biased towards the anti-choice agenda.
