An investigation by CPD's Investigative Response Team determined he had a un when CPD officers confronted him in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue on the evening of June 5. Officer Rivera was part of a CPD tactical team on patrol just before 10 p.m. when they tried to conduct an investigatory stop. As they approached, the suspect [Arnold] ran into a nearby apartment building. Police chased him inside, and sources said Rivera and her partner followed into the apartment on the second floor. CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said when officers got to that apartment, they were confronted by a second person armed with a rifle.

Around 7 p.m., records show, Najera's wife went to retrieve their vehicle. In the meantime, Najera asked a uniformed CPD officer to let him sit in a squad car, but that officer refused. Najera then called the department's 18th District (Near North) station to request a complaint be filed against the uniformed officer. A supervisor in the 18th District contacted a sergeant in the detached services section, which oversees the mayor's detail. When Najera arrived on the mayor's block, he was confronted by the sergeant, records show.

The City of Chicago has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by the Chicago Freedom School a week after the nonprofit filed suit against the city, claiming they were issued an "illegal" cease and desist order for simply feeding and helping protesters trapped Downtown in late May. On May 30, the school at 719 S. State St., which teaches primarily Black and Brown youth the fundamentals of community organizing, acted as a refuge to protesters who were trapped Downtown as curfew approached. School leaders knew their members were out on the front lines, confronted with pepper spray and potentially trapped as bridges were lifted and CTA service halted. They offered granola bars, water and free pizza to folks trying to figure out a ride home. The cease and desist order didn't lead to a fine, but the order directs Police Supt. Brown to "arrest any and all agents, and employees of the CFS if found engaging in the business or occupation of preparing and serving food on premises..," according to the lawsuit. With the city rescinding the order, the school says it can continue its work without the fear of reprisal from the city. "The false accusations and bogus searches will cease and we no longer have the threat of arrest looming over our heads," they said.

The first measure, which places the requirements on law enforcement agencies and police officer applicants, was spurred by revelations that before he became a Sangamon County deputy, Grayson worked for five law enforcement agencies and had been the subject of citizen complaints and criticism from superiors who questioned his competence. Before he went into law enforcement, Grayson also had two DUIs on his record. Sangamon County’s hiring of Grayson in 2023 occurred after officials with the sheriff’s office spoke with some of Grayson’s previous law enforcement employers whose representatives questioned Grayson’s abilities as an officer and said he needed more training. But Grayson was still hired after a former Sangamon County deputy gave him a good recommendation.

COBOL is rarely used today, and as such, Musk's cadre of young engineers may well be unfamiliar with it. Because COBOL does not have a date type, some implementations rely instead on a system whereby all dates are coded to a reference point. The most commonly used is May 20, 1875, as this was the date of an international standards-setting conference held in Paris, known as the Convention du Mètre. These systems default to the reference point when a birth date is missing or incomplete, meaning all of those entries in 2025 would show an age of 150. That's just one possible explanation for what DOGE allegedly found. Musk could also have simply looked up the SSA's own website, which explains that since September 2015 the agency has automatically stopped benefit payments when anyone reaches the age of 115.

The officer did not get her address, Monte said, noting she presented a passport but no documentation with a Michigan address. So, the officer ran Ramirez Verduzco's name through the Michigan Law Enforcement Information Network. That system is frequently reserved for tracking down information on people accused of a crime. The search triggered an alert for ICE officials, who contacted a Van Buren Township detective two days after the initial report, records show. Within two weeks of Van Buren Township police closing their case, federal prosecutors issued a warrant for her arrest. Later, Ramirez Verduzco sat in her car preparing to drive somewhere, Dwyer said. Before Ramirez Verduzco could move, multiple people prevented her from leaving. They demanded Ramirez-Verduzco get out of her car, but before she could, Dwyer said the agents shattered her driver's-side window. Officers removed her from the car so quickly it was not placed in park, resulting in it hitting an ICE vehicle, according to ICE. Frequently, federal officials house people detained on immigration allegations at the Sanilac County Jail. Jail records show Ramirez Verduzco arrived the evening of March 21. On Wednesday, Ramirez Verduzco appeared before a federal judge in Detroit. She wore an orange jail short-sleeved shirt and pants, with a white long-sleeve shirt underneath. She was handcuffed, her wrists shackled to a belly chain.

He bore witness to untold death and suffering on an almost daily basis for seventeen months. He was displaced over twenty times. He was often hungry. He buried many of his journalist colleagues. In November, he was wounded in an Israeli airstrike. I still can’t believe I am referring to him in the past tense. Israel obliterates the present. When I contacted Hossam in November to ask him to write for Drop Site News, he was enthusiastic. “Greetings habibi. May God keep you. I am very happy to have this opportunity,” he wrote. “There are so many ideas, scenes, stories.”

One year ago today, Jayden Perkins was murdered by a man who repeatedly threatened his mother. She called CPD on Feb 1, 2024 to report Crosetti Brand showed up at her apt after threatening her. CPD did not file a report & a judge did not approve Jayden’s mother’s OP against Brand.
During a detention hearing Friday, prosecutors said the woman had been alerted when Brand was released on parole in October because she was the victim in previous domestic violence cases against Brand, including repeated violations of protection orders. Just months after his release, the woman received a text message from Brand on Jan. 30 threatening her family, prosecutors said. Two days later, he allegedly appeared at the door of her apartment building in the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue. RELATED 11-year-old boy slain on North Side remembered as a 'bright light' Prosecutors said the woman informed the state parole officials. When confronted by a commander from the Illinois Department of Corrections, Brand admitted going to the woman's home but claimed he was "looking for an apartment." Still, Brand was sent back to prison while the Illinois Prisoner Review Board considered the allegations, prosecutors said. The board held a hearing and "determined the alleged violations did not meet the preponderance of evidence standard," it said in a statement, adding that Brand was "returned to parole on March 12 and notifications were made again to registered victims." The board did not say why they did not find Brand in violation of his parole, given Brand's criminal record and his past experience with the woman. In the meantime, the woman sought an emergency protection order. During a Feb. 21 hearing, the woman told Judge Thomas Nowinski that Chicago police didn't let her file a report when she called about Brand. Instead, they told her to get a protection order. "They asked me, do I have one currently," she said, "and I told them no."

Boyd told WTTW News in April 2024 that she does not expect a financial settlement or jury award to repair the physical and emotional damage she suffered. “I believe no amount of money can repair harm once it is caused,” said Boyd, adding that it could help her pay for college. Boyd said the protest where she was injured was a defining moment of her life. “It messed me up mentally for a long time,” Boyd said. “Today, I can watch the video and just brush it off my shoulder as if I just have to get over it. Because things happen like this. CPD, sometimes, they escape accountability. This is what happens. This is what we see. This is what’s been happening. So it wasn’t a shock.”

A source close to COPA’s leadership says Kersten stands by her work, framing the effort to oust her as an attempted coup led by a faction of the city agency’s staff. The source paints the Community Commission on Public Safety and Accountability’s inquiry into their complaints as an overreach by an understaffed and relatively new body. That city agency started the process to remove Kersten before Inspector General Deborah Witzburg’s office closed an investigation that the oversight body had pushed for, according to the source, who questions the panel’s decision to hold closed-door meetings with COPA staffers. That was even though it has no investigatory powers with confidentiality protections. But Anthony Driver, president of the Community Commission on Public Safety and Accountability, says he stands behind the panel’s efforts “to strengthen accountability.” “City government employees who decide to come forward with any accusations deserve to be heard and respected, not attacked,” Driver says. “The CCPSA is doing its job, which includes listening to anyone who raises credible concerns and carefully scrutinizing any claims it receives.”

Past councils greatly restricted the use of such weapons in the wake of the Seattle Police Department’s violent response to racial justice protests following the May 2020 murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. The weapons are designed to incapacitate or deter people without killing them, but can cause serious injury or even death if improperly deployed. Previous legislation, passed as a result of public outcry over police violence and lawsuits, had all but barred the use of the weapons.

During a July 2024 press conference, Wilburn fought back tears as he recalled the last voicemail he got from his daughter. In an emotional interview on CNN after body-camera footage from the July 6, 2024, fatal shooting was released, he spoke about the devastating loss and his family’s call for accountability. “I know I won’t see her again in this world, but there’s another world that I will see her in.” Wilburn, who had quadruple bypass surgery in 2022, also said during the CNN interview that he’s thankful to be alive today, but had this happened two years ago he may not have survived the level of pain he says he feels daily from losing Massey.
