My artwork titled "What Love Endures" was chosen in the "Nostalgia: A Portal to Healing" Open Call. The subject is extremely personal and reading my description/artist statement (in ALT) still brings tears to my eyes. Thank you, @34gallery.org 💜
This painting depicts my father sitting in the familiar comfort of his chair, surrounded by the security of home, while my mother walks alone through an open desert. The image reflects the ten long years she cared for him during his dementia, and the quiet confession she once shared — that sometimes she wanted to walk out into the desert and never return. I didn’t fully understand then how hard those years were for her, how much strength it took to stay. In creating this piece, I am confronting the guilt of not being there for her as much as I wish I had been, and allowing myself to finally let that guilt go. It is both a memory and a release — a moment of love, loss, and forgiveness.
