The *gets their morality from religious text* people don't actually have any morals and will constantly reinterpret said text to justify acting on whatever their baseline desires are like an unscrupulous accountant looking for loopholes in the tax code or a drug addict looking for a higher high.

And that *screwing over other people* thing is a spectrum that goes from cutting other drivers off in traffic to child rape and the murder of entire populations. Give your local door-to-door sales goon enough power and eventually they'll do what Hegseth did. It's a sickness.

You can't show them enough facts, or shame them enough, or paint them as hypocritical enough times to correct their behavior because they're getting a dopamine high everytime they find new ways to screw over other people.

The predisposition to gravitate towards scam-adjcent careers (corporate BS, advertising, sales, skilled trades that use lots of upselling, MLM schemes, dishonest content creation) is also evidence of addictive behavior coupled with flexible or absent morals.

It's remarkable how much of the whole slide in to autocracy thing could have been avoided if lying to the courts or to congressional hearings were sentenced as "this will destroy your entire life".
It's the prime example of a crime where tough sentencing WOULD actually act as a deterrent.

Lying, as a whole, should be far more harshly and swiftly punished than it is. I'm talking orders of magnitude. It's one of the biggest reasons for the corrosion of society over the last 75 years. Every time we accept a lie the lying gets worse.
