I agree re the opportunity - we are lucky and have three replacements posts that we’re currently recruiting for - interestingly we were also lucky in 2020, when we had more. It makes a big difference.

Not sure about the “missing” bit - UK institutions have financial issues, Netherlands have government cuts etc. I’d say we’re well aware that it’s a buyers market at the moment, but lots of places have no headroom to hire.

We have a bit on that in section 4.2, we look at spillovers to other supermarkets nearby and other crimes - there’s not a lot of evidence on spillovers. The other bit to keep in mind - shoplifting increases everywhere over the time period - just a lot less strongly at Tesco than elsewhere.

This started out as Wednesday's undergrad dissertation. Supervising undergrad dissertations has always been one of the aspects of the job I like the most, so it’s particularly nice to see outcomes such as this! Very fun project to do as well!

Thanks Alex! Was really good to talk to you.

That would be brilliant- come and say hi!

Always nice to see your government carefully engaging with evidence and coming up with nuanced takes that do a complex topic justice 🙄...
If you thought the PM’s speech was punchy, his foreword to the immigration white paper says high net migration has done “incalculable damage” to the country.

That is a serious shift in tone for a Labour government/party.

I wouldn't count on that given that numbers are already contracting across many subjects. My own and neighbouring disciplines are probably fine, but that's far from uniform...

As is a lot of the rest to be honest...

The instrument measurement error is *wild*.

Oh my, looks like the new season is gonna be horror - Carolin discovers strange life forms in her house…

If the school FE captures things like peers, I would expect both to be “big”. My prior would be that the family FE is slightly bigger, but I’d be very surprised if the school FE wasn’t sizeable.
