Some papers are dreadful, while others appear to be fine, and I suspect the AI usage may be by non-English speakers, or for copy-editing. So treating each paper on its own right makes more sense.

An interesting perspective on this from a journal editor. We have an AI screening service and recently we've noticed a large number of articles submitted to us have been written with AI assistance. Our policy is not to reject outright, but to treat each paper as if it was written by a human.

I'm sort of surprised by the strength of the reaction here to the OpenAI porn announcement, I do find the idea of digital onanism slightly ridiculous and in bad taste, but I can't muster any outrage. Whatever floats people's boats, I won't be judgemental.

Yes! LLMs are great at so many elements of research: bouncing ideas, structuring, copy editing. They can be used for actual research, but you should always check twice the information they give.

There's a good reason why the "AI will be brought down by the bubble" discourse is the dominant coping mechanism at the moment. We've already gone through the "copyright", "nobody uses it", and "model collapse" stages of grief.

I think that there's an element of cabin fever happening, the place isn't getting many new users, so people who are not using other social media start arguing over the silliest minutiae, often becoming more irascible than warranted.

Sure, you can't dehumanise something that is not human, but that was never the complaint and the objection about the ickyness of the practice, it is the humans that are inevitably going to get targetted.

I'm bored by most of the machine slur discourse, but it's baffling that people haven't made the connection between having fun with made-up slurs for machines, and the reality of using those slurs to associate with real people who use machines. I've already seen unironic uses of "clanker-lover".

I don't spend a lot of time here, so I am often left feeling entirely baffled by Bluesky-specific discourse that floats past in one of my feeds. I have no idea what most of you are talking about half of the time.
