Soon to be studying history at Birkbeck. I like books, Early Modern culture and pretending to be a Tudor on the weekends.

Exciting. I really want to read up on the early trade fraternities, I’ll have to get a copy

I think it’s poking fun at a badge used by freemasons, especially the Order of Knights Templar, who have a cross under a crown similar to the cigarette under the doormouse

The Latin is a reference to the Emperor Constantine who supposedly saw the phrase “in hoc signo vinces” in the sky before he went to war, before a Christian cross. At that point Rome was still a pantheonic religion, but he put the Chi Ro on his soldier’s shields which was said to bring him victory

Tremendous woodcut from a 1560s London, anonymously printed,
reformist tract by William Turner (STC 24356)
TRUTH chastised by SUBTLETY while held captive in stocks with a rope about its neck in the grip of TYRANNY
Black ink printed engraving on aged browning paper of a figure ‘Truth’ chained in stocks and chastised by a cleric dubbed ‘SVTLETI’ and held by a rope around his neck but another cloaked figure dubbed ‘TIRANI’

Your content truly is a godsend. We need more spoken Latin online

Ugh.

Go to @jorvikviking.bsky.social instead, they have real people who know loads. Or one of the re-enactments - @kentwellhall.bsky.social had Vikings last weekend - where you will get a much richer multisensory experience and there will be people doing real things.

Unfortunately it doesn’t yet seem to be useable. Although it might’ve improved a lil since I asked about it

Some of the more extravagant hands in Augustino De Siena’s writing book. Taken from my beautiful handbound facsimile by Merrion Press. The original copy was in the British Library at the time of printing and was published in 1568.

My writing a few months ago. Augustino De Siena’s writing book is a beautiful piece of handwriting history

In preparation for #Kentwell1536 one of our #Tudors has been working on his ‘English secretarie’ hand from Augustino de Siena’s 1560 book.
Goal is to be as neat as Cranmer (or Cranmer’s clerk.)

Found a dope game table today. It's 500 years old so hopefully they'll sell it to me on the cheap.

The Romans definitely liked being ambiguous

Then there’s “cum” meaning when or where, and then about six words meaning “because” for some reason

Ubi Kirkdalem secutus sum, non in animo me Latinam linguam meam usare

I thought to myself for a moment. I knew he was an early Latin writer. But I didn’t realise Terrence was THAT early

I’m assuming 1666 is a typo for 166 ☺️

This illegally issued cedola, or receipt of a betting slip, for the papal #conclave of 21-24 April 1585, was undersigned by the Medici ambassador to Rome (👀), who wagered 100 gold scudi on the victory of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. (+ a blank version for all your #papalelection betting needs ...)

Prayer books in the Middle Ages & early modern period were used by people over generations. Personal objects, they are commonly the site where ppl left notes about important events, as here, in a late 15th- or early 16thC hand which wrote in the November calendar page , "My Moder departed to God."
The bottom half of a calendar page. The main text is written in an early 15th-century formal book hand. In a more casual script are inserted the words I wrote in my post. The manuscript is Cambridge UL MS Ee 1.14
