... and I'm off to find what Leigh Fermor I can to re-read...
Now you've got me watching the ambush - at night in the film, doubtless for added drama, but I think you are right as to the book

The Leigh Fermor book of all this, 2015, is entitled 'Abducting a general'. I've not re-read - yet; but I don't think the 'ambush' was at night: it was just when the general was going home for supper
I hadn't realised that the film was renamed "Night Ambush" for the US market. I wonder why - too many words in the original, perhaps, and insufficient implied drama. I must watch it as well as do some reading.

Oh dear (as to renaming). We found the film recently, and really enjoyed watching it. When had I last seen Dirk Bogard in a film? I remember a Guardian headline (c 1969) of a review by Derek Malcolm of 'Romeo and Juliet': 'Ill bred by moon light' - harsh, perhaps?...

I saw the film of his part (mostly his idea) as undercover Brit/Cretan soldiers capture a German general in Crete: 'Ill met by moonlight' (Dirk Bogard as Leigh Fermor: c 1957). I've just ordered his book on this, to go with my small Battle of Crete library. I must read the story of his walk again...

The writer Patrick Leigh Fermor was born #OTD 11 February 1915. In December 1933, at the age of 18, he set out to walk across Europe from London to Constantinople, a journey which took him four years. His story captures the continent in the deceptive peace before the Second World War. 1/3

3/3 Artemis Cooper's biography 'Patrick Leigh Fermor: An Adventure', and Stanley Moss's 'Ill Met By Moonlight', WWII adventures on Crete when Fermor kidnapped a German general! The two got on well thanks to a shared love of Latin verse, and were reunited emotionally on 'This Is Your Life' in 1972.
