A sobering take on the joys (?) of grandparenting in China. . .now out in the JDE! The rollout of the universal two-child policy ⬆️ number of grandchildren + ⬇️ mental health (but happily, not clinical depression)

Important new paper on mental health in PhD programs finally published: from @EvaRanehill @Sanna_Bergvall @annahsandberg, evidence that in Sweden, use of psychiatric medicine sharply ⬆️ after enrollment in PhD compared to other highly educated ind, up to a peak of 40%

Have noticed the number of journals with explicit policies around use of AI in referee reports (i.e., mandated acknowledgment of policies ruling out this use) is increasing *extremely* rapidly

And evidence from Pakistan that even a modest subsidy toward transport costs for pregnant women seeking health care in Pakistan ⬆️ utilization of postnatal care and thus ⬆️ height-for-age among their children

Evidence from the same context + the same team (now adding @JeffBloem) that while depression ⬆️ among women in the perinatal period in S Africa, exposure to the grant during the perinatal period eliminates this increased risk

Another paper joint w/@mmalloush now forthcoming at @J_HumanResource finds that in utero exposure to cash transfers (the Older Person's Grant) in South Africa leads to significant ⬆️ in height-for-age + weight-for-age among children

One published paper joint w/Majid finds a positive effect of UCTs on women's labor force participation in Pakistan, and also some evidence of positive effects on resilience

higher-level conceptual weakness; so maybe in that sense, I didn't learn that much about the core arguments; but important confirmation of where I should focus my efforts. Though it's not free, imo it's worth it (you can also see a preview of comments, before purchasing)!

and imprecise or slightly incorrect language used to describe empirical methods (that were slightly on my research frontier, and thus where my language was less confident). It also matched for all 3 papers my own self-assessment of the most significant. . .

incorrect citations (citing a paper that didn't contain the content I was describing) or unclear citations; coding errors (average standard effect that didn't match the coefficients on the constituent variables); missing pieces of key descriptive info;

(Full disclosure - I initially used it around June, to share some feedback. Got 2 credits and I used them more recently; the tool also improved a lot in this period.) On various papers, it's caught errors in calculation of sample size; mismatches btw text and table;

#econtwitter #econsky: recently used Refine.ink (developed by @ben_golub) as a AI assessment tool for papers + it is amazing, so wanted to share some examples of what it can do if you are curious. (It's much, much better than other free tools I've used)

The best part is when you're going in circles trying to debug code and it keeps saying "Great work, you're definitely almost there now!" when in fact the most recent edits introduced like 4 new errors

And new evidence about the effects of a livelihoods program modified to target persons with disabilities in Uganda shows that the program does encourage switching from casual labor to more productive work, ⬇️ social interaction but does not ⬇️ stigma

More evidence from Somalia that a role model intervention in middle school has positive effects on girls' and boys' attitudes toward gender equity when delivered by female role model, but no effects on educ aspirations. Joint w/@danilaserra_eco @EconCath

Evidence from Tanzania: while self-reported socioemotional skills show a gender gap (in favor of men), behavioral measures show few, + smaller gaps - suggesting underlying pattern is men's overestimation of own skills! joint w/@rchlcassidy @claradelav

One paper in JAE assesses effects of variously sized business grants vis-a-vis UCTs in Somalia; findings suggest business grants have larger effects on business ownership + income vis-a-vis UCT; medium-size grantsmost cost-effective. W/@munshisulaiman

Today's cool young researcher #econtwitter #econsky is @KipkechElijah, a brand-new PhD from @tcdeconomics: congratulate him! Have been seeing Elijah's work for years, was excited to meet him for the first time this year + now feature him here

Stumbled across this fascinating paper today about the long-run effects of an early (the first?) community health intervention, a tuberculosis detection program in none other than Framingham, MA! (Close to where I grew up). . .⬆️ case detection, but no effects on mortality

An unfortunate byproduct of the rapid ascension of AI is a tendency for people to often use AI as a summary term for "anything related to computing" and I find this to be extremely confusing.

If you're talking about AI, explain exactly what you're referring to!
