James Hankins, formerly of Harvard? He's 70 yo, so perhaps he retired, calling it "leaving." You know, for attention. He can be a gaping a$$hole while being an excellent historian of the Renaissance. The latter has little to do w/ being a kind, thoughtful, tolerant, or good person.

The Monarchy had a number of official languages, and my memory is that FJ's announcement was published in all of them. BTW, while the Jews of Galicia and elsewhere used Yiddish, the Jews of Bohemia and Trieste did not, etc. Of course, none of the Sephardim did.

Not all archival documents are Kurrenschrift! The Czech handwriting isn't bad. Also, starting around the 1880s, there are typewriters in the Austrian government offices!
