Dense tissue can make it more difficult for radiologists to detect signs of cancer on a mammogram. Women with dense breasts may also have a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer. Despite this, many women are not informed about their breast density or how it may impact their care.
Breasts are made up of a combination of fatty tissue and dense (fibrous and glandular) tissue. Approximately 50% of women have dense breasts, and that matters for several important reasons
