This is a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction zone megathrust event. And it is another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku in 2011.

House Approps comm. Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies subcomm. Dems really dislike this bill. Grateful to @morelle.house.gov for pointing out it doesn't provide enough $ for science agencies, including #NSF. I hope @delauro.house.gov and all the Dems push for something better. #CJS

🧪 CRITICAL UPDATE: The House draft version is now out.

✅ Like the Senate's version, there's no cut to NASA's budget.

❌ There's a 23% proposed cut to NSF's budget.

8-page summary: appropriations.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

Draft bill: appropriations.house.gov/sites/evo-su...
🧪 BREAKING (good news): Senate subcommittee says NO! to Trump's proposed slashes to NASA & NSF funding.

Today, the subcommittee said to keep NASA + NSF funding at $33.9 billion, the same as in FY24.

See 7:15 below. Full Senate appropriations committee meets tomorrow about it.

Whew - the Senate is standing up for NSF! $60M cut, while not great, is a huge improvement over the President's/House budget.
RIGHT NOW: The full Senate appropriations committee is meeting today (now!) to deliberate on yesterday's subcommittee recommendations.

New detail: Cuts for NSF going from...

56% (President's request) -->
0.67% (Senate subcommittee proposal, NOT 67%)

Long road still ahead, but HOPE!!

Thank you, Congressman Beyer!
Today, the Trump Administration and Governor Youngkin announced plans to relocate HUD into NSF's HQ building in Alexandria.

NSF thrives in and because Northern Virginia is a robust science and technology hub. Our community remains the ideal location for its headquarters.

🚨CALLING ALL SCIENTISTS

Please adapt the following email laid out by Dr. Prather and send to your Congressional Reps.

Personally, the first part of my PhD was funded by the NSF (second half by NASA).

The NSF is critical to our scientific ecosystem. Most of us have been funded by it at some pt.
Dear Congressmen Scott Peters, Juan Vargus, and Michael Levin:

I am writing to express my profound concern and deep frustration over reports suggesting that the National Science Foundation (NSF) may be displaced and de-prioritized in favor of HUD space. (3/)

Call your Congresspeople, folks. The staffers I’ve spoken with consistently have no idea about the damage going on at NSF.

Call your Senators and House Reps to point out what an egregious example of waste, fraud, and abuse this would be. HUD Sec Turner is asking for extensive renovations including a private elevator, gym, and luxury dining room for himself and his cronies.
NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years.

NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."
