So now I am an unpaid caregiver to some older adult. 4 hours of that twice a week and I’m wiped out. I’m happy to do it; duty and honour run deep. To tighten an already taut belt is sadistic: it is reading out of the conservative playbook under the guise of altruism. We are all fighting to thrive.

In 2010’s, psych doc ordered me not to work anymore. I tried to bring up possible return to work plans. He’d stop me and ask surely I wasn’t thinking of working again. In desperation I brought up gig work. He again stopped me. Finally he wrote me a note to excuse me from working. It was defeating.

I think after 30yrs of alternating volunteer and short-lived paid work, I have contributed to society in ways that truly helped at least a few. I’m surprised voluntary work has been ignored. The benefits i received supported my unpaid work.

I held part time jobs that would end up in suicidality because the stress got to me and I’d have a breakdown each time. If I did do well, the coworkers would dig up dirt and convince the boss to fire me. In interviews they do ask which disability I have.The law that they shouldn’t doesn’t stop them.
