The Middle Ages produced incredible art, and there were some fairly progressive times for a few decades post Black Death, but as a historian I am begging people to please stop posting Pre-Raphaelite pictures on TikTok and romanticizing medieval history...

These are chopines, a platform shoe worn by women in the 15th-17th centuries in Italy and Spain. From a few inches to over 20 inches, the higher the height the more wealth and power you were perceived to have. Basically you could literally tower over your opps 👠

In 14th-20th century China high ranking women wanted you to know they were rich. Like I don't lift a finger rich. So they grew their nails out to prove it, wearing jewel encrusted nail guards to ensure their nails were protected. Acrylics ain't got nothing on those divas 💅

Okay so those cute acne patches? Yeah that's old news. In the 16th century in Europe women and men would decorate their face with silk or velvet patches, which covered acne, blemishes, or more commonly: small-pox scars and syphilis sores 😳

He convened the Sixth Ecumenical Council and undertook negotiations between the Holy See and Constantine IV regarding the Byzantine court influencing the papal elections. He died in 681, possibly due to plague, making him 106-107 years old!

Pope Agatho was said to have been born in 574 (possibly 577) according to a letter written by Pope Gregory I who references a monk named Agathon at a Benedictine monastery. This would make Agatho around 103-104 years old in 678 when he was elected to the papacy…
