i published a tech preview of a side project. not announcing it anywhere else aside from here for now since it still needs a lot of work. it's buggy and will ruin your computer (intentionally... because cybersecurity adversary simulation). closed source for now, might change later. www.macat.io

It’s ridiculous. CISOs of nobody companies (like tiny regional healthcare) are zoinked out on LinkedIn AI fumes vibrating in place: “I need to defend against quantum AI metamorphic malware that’s going to implode our future fusion plant”. No, you need to turn on MFA and configure your firewall.
Who’s your favorite Jedi? (Wrong answers only)
Ruin a book with a car:

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Nissan
A gaggle of Deleuzians tried to scramble my brains with their profoundly weird books and I don’t think I ever recovered… but I’m slightly more normal now and way less angsty and isolated.
terrible study ignoring the c-level goof brigade overhiring for the past 5 years trying to blockchain and metaverse everything. of course a number of service industries have stopped ballooning up on untrained hires in tech and support roles as the economy sputters
True but looks like they’re self-diagnosing or went to some mold quack FMD. Mold’s everywhere. Unavoidable in temperate climates. Every time lawns mowed kicks up a ton of spores. If he’s got MCAS and broad molecular mimicry issues, good f’ing luck, going to need a good immunologist
more chickenshit corporate lies to evade severance by doing stealth layoffs
For some historical compare - in 2017 the NSA ran a project called Unfetter which was defunded. Despite being a useful OSS threat intel tool, the cost to continue led to the project dying. For Attack Flows & micro emulations this is probably a total death sentence.
Ugh. From what I can see, they RIF’d the dev team on Attack Flows back in June / July. The administration’s attitude towards cyber makes me believe MITRE will be more aerospace-focused for the next few years. I wouldn’t be surprised by cuts at McLean next

A video arguing that women shouldn’t be able to vote was just shared by Trump’s Secretary of Defense, the guy in charge of our whole military.

And Democratic Party leaders still can’t stand up to this administration?! Our rights are on the line and all our party leaders offer us is silence.
No one is paying for it. $1T in spending globally and no company is making anywhere close to their costs on it and there’s no path to positive ROI. They’re throwing massive amounts of time and money at vibes
If you get time, this is worth a read regarding the current AI bubble. I don’t know what happens long term but the revenue being low and consumer products being so bad is a problem. Torching billions on unreliable ai has to be screwing up the job market

It guzzles tokens like it’s in a hot dog eating contest compared to Claude and OpenAI. It’s not necessarily more expensive, just chews them up and also gets yapping really easily.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
What do we get from $1T+ invested in GenAI so far? Chat and Claude code are ok-ish for improving debugging and scaffolding. There’s frame gen tech for gaming. Enterprise copilots are faceplanting though. Maybe the job market sucks because we lit $1T on fire and aren’t seeing real returns?

I made a video showing off some of MACAT's adversary simulation features

Back to dev soon after all the recording fun - going to start on building a portable version that has content built-in pretty soon.

I used to do something similar with physical pen/paper. It felt helpful. I haven’t had to do it in a while. What tool are you using?
the temperature regulation and acoustics are a worthy trade off for having to clean it. I had zero carpet in a house for a long time with almost all hardwood flooring and laminate in kitchen. The only way I’d ever do that again is if I lived alone like a reclusive wizard.
MS is killing me. When did it get this bad?

We’re trying to get my Dad a new laptop and with win 11’s out of the box annoyance level, he’s going to bury it in the woods unless I turn off all the widgets, ai trash, one drive, and ad bloat… and pray they don’t force push more bloatware updates
