What's happening to the champions?

I've taken a look at some of the patterns that explain Liverpool's start to 2025-26.

It's a long read on long passes, pressing, possession, set-plays, away form and more - and it's free at the link below. #LFC

What's happening to the champions?
Six trends, from long passing, to pressing, to away form.

I know it might seem a crazy opinion given how bad our form has been but when I look at the talent in the squad, and am reminded of how PSG were first half of last season, I do think we have a good chance at the Champs League. I believe we'll improve, but the gap in league might be too big by then.

As Jonathan mention in the article it is ironic that for someone so focussed on his "brand" (previously lots of extra interviews, endorsements, changing shirt name and to "Trent" etc. as part of trying to rise up Balon d'Or placing) he lost his only advocates in the massive Liverpool fanbase.

On the bench in Madrid and out of the England squad, the full-back has no one to fight his corner – so will have to do it himself “He chose to start from zero. To keep showing up, day by day. It was about respect, courage and a genuine desire to belong. What I saw was a person growing beyond himself. In football, words can build trust, connection, identity. That is what true professionalism really looks like.” Well, at least someone is pleased with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s progress at Real Madrid. Unfortunately, it happens to be Sara Duque, his language teacher. When Alexander-Arnold filmed a video in hesitant but really very good Spanish for Duque’s Instagram page, it’s fair to say it wasn’t received entirely in the spirit of pride and achievement it was intended. Very quickly, internet auditors started to do the maths. Alexander-Arnold claimed to have been learning Spanish for five months, which meant he must have started in May, when – gasp – he was still under contract at Liverpool. Rat, scum, traitor, etc. Perhaps, judging by how well he spoke at his unveiling in June, he had been under Duque’s tutelage even earlier. All of which brought to mind the old Frank Skinner joke (although others have claimed it) about John Lennon airport. A fitting tribute, seeing as it was the first place he went after making a bit of cash. Continue reading...

To highlight Barcelona's new found frugality, their €490m gross transfer spend in the last five years was less than half of the €1.2 bln in the preceding 5-year period. Indeed, net spend in the last two years was just €3m.

An awful performance, especially the first half. The 2 CBs were so bad but I was especially dissapointed with how cowardly the midfield 3 were in possession first half. Didn't take any responsibility and put it all pressure back to the defenders.

Sky have City playing 433 with Foden in midfield 3, rather than 4231 with Foden wide and Cherki no.10. If it's Bernardo and Foden in the midfield 3 hopefully we can use our better physicality to combat their technical ability.

Same team as vs Madrid. Was our best performance of the season imo so makes sense. Let's go boys!

A reminder that David Kogan was *not* on the shortlist for the position of head of the football regulator service and that the candidates who *had* been shortlisted were then ignored in his favour. Kogan did not even apply for the position.

Manchester City play a game of football today. Most of us will be watching. Which makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is why so few care about City’s owner playing an active role in a genocide so gruesome it can be seen from space. By @barneyronay.bsky.social

Silence over Sudan: why do Manchester City’s owners get away with so much?
Two midweek matches in England had a backdrop of war and geopolitics, but only one drew large protests

Meanwhile Mac Allister's insistence on starting every game for Argentina even when he's barely fit has hindered his Liverpool performances on occasions and tires him out.

I don't know the ins and outs at Middlesbrough but they're 2nd in the table and one of favs for promotion while it looks like Wolves are favourites for demotion. Risky move for Edwards.

10 of the 11 are certainties to start vs City, it's just a question of if Slot starts his favourite Gakpo or Wirtz. Cody tends to score his goals at home not away and Wirtz tucking in makes our midfield more compact so I'd start Flo even though he's hasn't got G&A yet.

Slot has a real cunundrum. Normally at this stage of Carabao we'd rotate entire team, but Liverpool need a win and can't really accept losing another game at Anfield especially vs Palace. Slot needs to use the game as a testing ground for the team he needs vs Villa, Madrid and City.

Well that was an absolute shit show of a match.

van Hecke is very good on the ball but I don't really rate his defending.

It's always noticeable that despite breaking records as a player Neville's teammate and friend Ryan Giggs still hasn't, and might never, be inducted into the Hall if Fame on account of being a pretty awful person.
Gary Neville has been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Will be interesting to see if Slot sticks with the 442/3412 system he used vs Frankfurt it reverts to the previous system. Slot indicated that was a system to combat the difficulties we've had vs teams that played 541 vs us.

Look forward to going to see this some time. Loved Asif's Senna and Maradona films on the big screen and now the King gets his own.

We had a lot of players doing well on international break and Slot now has a lot of fit players to choose from. Our squad is stronger than United's but that doesn't make any game vs them straight forward, nevertheless after 3 losses anything but a win at Anfield would be a big worry. Pressure on.

Players like Borini were indicative of Rodgers' lack of appreciation of what an LFC quality player was. BR gushed over him after playing for him at Swansea but beyond his high work rate it was quick for fans to realise he wasn't the world beater Rodgers claimed he'd be. Had a solid career though.
Former Premier League striker Fabio Borini has joined League Two side Salford City, who are owned by David Beckham and Gary Neville.

The 34-year-old, who previously represented Chelsea, Liverpool, and Sunderland, scored 16 goals in 111 top-flight games.

Erling Haaland has now scored at 22 of the 23 stadiums he's played at in the Premier League, the highest ratio of any player to appear at more than one ground in the competition’s history.

The only ground he has failed to score at so far is Anfield...

LFC in the 1st 7 games played 5 out of top 8 teams and others were Burnley away (who hadn't lost at home for over a year) and Newcastle away who were out for blood. Two games lost were only in injury time by 1 goal. LFC 2nd while not playing anywhere near their best.
