"It's also a broader issue involving the value chain, which handles these pellets in a way that doesn't prevent their loss into the environment,"Lucie Padovani marine litter lobbying officer at Surfrider. today.rtl.lu/news/science...
Light, buoyant, and insoluble: EU takes aim at plastic pellets to prevent their nightmare cleanup
today.rtl.lu
This is just the beginning. We now call on EU Member States and industry to fully implement and enforce these rules, ensuring no more plastic pellets slip through the cracks. 💪🌍
Pellet pollution is a daily reality for coastal, but also non-coastal communities — from Tarragona, Spain to Ecaussinnes, Belgium — and this Regulation must become a turning point for clean seas and healthy ecosystems.
Many small and medium-sized enterprises escape the full scope of the regulation. Lucie Padovani, our marine litter lobbying officer: “The responsibility will now fall on national and regional authorities. If the rules themselves aren’t strict enough, the on-the-ground inspections will have to be.”
As part of the @rethinkplastic.bsky.social, we welcome this landmark law, which introduces binding measures across the supply chain. For the first time, producers and carriers will be held accountable for the billions of pellets lost into our environment each year. Yet, challenges remain.
After more than a decade of advocacy, today marks a major milestone in the fight against plastic pellet pollution! 🌊 The European Parliament has officially approved the Regulation on preventing pellet losses to reduce microplastic pollution. A long-awaited step towards a zero pellet loss in Europe.
Countries worldwide are at risk from over 22 trillion plastic pellets spilling into the environment each year! ⚠️🌊 We're taking part in the Great Global Nurdle Hunt to help collect evidence and raise awareness of nurdle pollution. Join us and help stop this pollution ➡️ www.nurdlehunt.org.uk

But giving up is not an option: reducing pollution at its source, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring the sustainable management of our coasts are absolute priorities.
🥤 Plastic pollution, microplastics, and chemical substances continue to threaten the health of the ocean — and our own
🌍 Climate change risks to coastal and marine ecosystems are considered the most urgent to address
The conclusion is clear: we are not on track for 2030, nor for 2050.
What the report says:
🌊 66% of Europe’s marine environment is already significantly altered by human activities
💧 62% of water bodies are not in good ecological condition
❌ The targets for good environmental status of marine waters, set for 2020, were missed and are unlikely to be reached by 2030

💧 200,000+ people demanded stronger water laws.
💧 600+ scientists backed urgent pollution action.

🤮 Instead, we got delays & deregulation.
This deal must be strengthened - not signed off quietly. Drinking water, oceans and people's health must be protected. 💧

While new pollutants are added to 'watchlists', Member States won generous exemptions and weakened legal protections...
They’ve undermined the “non-deterioration” principle - a core safeguard of Europe’s water law - by allowing new loopholes for pollution & damage ⚠️
This is not cool.

🚨 Big water news from Brussels: EU institutions have just struck a deal on updated water pollution rules.
It includes tougher standards for PFAS, pesticides like glyphosate, and pharmaceutical pollution - but there's a catch.
The deal delays action until 2039…

💧 Toxic water at the EU Parliament today wasn’t just a stunt - it was a warning

As trilogue talks draw to an end, EU lawmakers must stand firm:
⚠️ No more loopholes
⏰ No more delay
🌍 Protect our rivers, our health, and our future

Pollution is real. Action must be too.
@europarl.europa.eu
The data is alarming:
☠️ 85% decline in freshwater species since 1970
☠️ Less than 50% of EU waters in good health
☠️ Hundreds of harmful chemicals go undetected
Freshwaters are 🌍 biodiversity hotspots - and they’re under threat.
These scientists are urging the EU to:
🧪 Update pollutant lists based on modern science
⚠️ Address chemical mixtures, not just individual substances
🛑 Enforce the Water Framework Directive
 🔍 Use advanced monitoring tools
