I've been waiting for someone to write a deep dive on how US Fire Departments get in the way of denser housing and safer streets.
New post: a week of hectic back and forth with fire officials and city council over Berkeley street festivals brings out into the open a conflict in city halls across USA. Fire depts opposition to traffic calming and safety measures. Is there a solution?

The Fire Department vs. Traffic Safety Advocates
Street safety advocates are butting heads with fire officials. Swift fire response does not have to come at the cost of lives on the roadway.

"A head of state using prosecutorial powers to target their enemies is not a new idea. It is one of the oldest abuses in human government."
We have spent more than 1,000 years trying to separate the awesome prosecutorial powers of the state from the personal whims and vendettas of the head of state.

Trump’s actions and ideology seek to reverse those gains.

Here’s the history he’d like to reverse www.ifyoucankeepit.org/p/the-oldest...

“OK, well trans people do exist in society, but I respect your right to your beliefs so much I’m willing to move you out of society for as long as you hold those beliefs. What? You thought we should’ve moved them out? Why? These aren’t THEIR beliefs.”

I wanted to find out when the deformation "dagnabbit" was coined and wound up finding out that "bear" is the same kind of word, used because you're too scared to invoke the actual thing
The Long Linguistic Journey to 'Dagnabbit'
This piece of pseudo-profanity is what's known as a taboo deformation—a word we say when we don't want to say the word.

I don't call it Home Despot just for shiggles.
Shop Lowe's instead.

TL;DR: Always always always appeal a denied claim & request an external review.
Few patients appeal a health insurance denial, but a little-known process that requires insurers and plans to seek an independent opinion can force insurers to pay for what can be lifesaving treatment.

Here’s what experts say you need to know.
This Little-Known Appeal Could Force Your Insurer to Pay for Lifesaving Care. Here’s How to File It.
When a health insurer refuses to pay for your treatment, you may have the right to have the denial reviewed — and potentially overturned — by an independent provider. Here are six steps experts sugges...

Way back in 2018 I did a walking tour of Vancouver with @brenttoderian.bsky.social and he explained how that city overcame this problem. You need family-sized units & also, crucially, *good urban schools*.
Young families typically leave cities for the suburbs. Here’s how to keep them downtown.

90% of the responses: "It's not about our public safety lies. It's just the fact they're here illegally." But that's a lie too! They're canceling millions of people's status. Every other week, it's 100K more stripped of status. FFS they're even trying to deport US-born children!
NEW data I've received: Just 5% of people detained by ICE since October 1 have had violent criminal convictions, 3/4 had no criminal convictions at all. Most "criminals" had immigration, traffic, and vice offenses. Not the "worst of the worst"...

"The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear."
~Nemik's manifesto, Andor
Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.
