Not a real cat. Fan of Harrison, Ezquerra, Pratchett, old British comics & sci-fi, B&W films, daft old comedy, basically just old.

Look, Universe. I really don’t need any more reasons to wish the only wealthy fantasy author to have a significant effect on society was Terry Pratchett. Don’t keep giving me more.

This is why I despise the motto of my institution. I realise it’s a historical allusion to the original benefactor, but it’s just so fecking *wrong*.

All learning is useful.
This is why it's important to have Arts/Humanities courses AND STEM courses. It all fits together, they compliment each other.

There's no such thing as useless education.
Adding alt text to this because this is fucking amazing and everyone deserves to read it.

Very grateful today that even the craven “parcel of rogues” that signed up to the Union didn’t allow Scots Law to be subsumed into the English system.

Rachel Reeves says on Laura Kuenssberg that she's asking working people to pay a little bit more.

This was all under the cover of a made up "black hole" whilst refusing to tax the super rich.

This Labour Government showing again exactly who they are and who they serve.

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have made a HUGE breakthrough towards a UNIVERSAL antiviral. By targeting sugar molecules found on the surface of many viruses that SHARE structural similarities, they identified FOUR compounds that successfully BLOCKED infections from SEVEN different viruses.

And of course it affects domestic students too. Many courses won’t run without the income from overseas students. Universities are knowledge engines, driving our economy and raising our reputation overseas.

Can’t believe the whole country has to suffer through the return of Dickensian childhood diseases because the worst, most ignorant attention-demanders decided other people’s expertise makes them feel bad

Hey “Scottish” Labour, any chance you could stop forcing YouTube adverts starring Anas Sarwar spouting rubbish at me? My neighbours must be getting fed up hearing me shout “f*ck off!” over and over again until the skip button appears.
Also, who’s paying for all of these?

Which means of course that the UK Gov removing such access from almost everyone is a deliberate decision to kill people.
Well now, would you look at that?

A massive study of NEARLY 300,000 people in the United States found that receiving an updated 2024-2025 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine REDUCED people’s risk of severe disease AND death in ALL age groups, REGARDLESS of immunity from prior infection or vaccination.

I have long advocated a variation on this approach:

1. Consider whether the request might actually be a good idea (you never know).
2. If not, is compliance unavoidable?
3. If neither 1 or 2, ignore, because it will be forgotten soon enough.

Even if you were willing to buy that an LLM/Gen AI tool has human-like intellect, you’re still left with the fact that an LLM doesn’t NEED a job to remain alive under capitalism, but a human does.

morality-wise, surely many would agree that humans should thus be given priority for jobs due to need

At this point, publications that platform Loeb's comments, or feature him as the story lede (i.e., "Harvard Astronomer says....") deserve to be ridiculed and not taken seriously.

If you choose to look away from the hugely negative impact is having for the sake of clicks, then that's on you.

I don't know how many more ways to say "you need to start fucking listening to the people who warned you that exactly this would happen."

LLM/GPT-type "AI" recreate patterns in pursuit of matching statistical correlations on which they're trained. They make shit up.

Do Not. Put this. In healthcare

Notice how it’s always, “the Bible must inform our laws!” until it comes to the +2,000 verses in the Bible that discuss the generous use of wealth and possessions in a way that prioritizes the needs of the poor, this sick, the stranger, the vulnerable, and the oppressed.
