My parents were my first examples of leadership. I grew up surrounded by public health and social justice warriors. A rotavirus vaccine was my 4th sibling. It’s no coincidence that I do what I do. Fortunate to still have Ma’s wisdom with me, & I can only hope to keep dad’s legacy alive. mkbhan.in.

Nothing will kill more children than the ongoing decimation of CDC, NIH, and USAID work to lift vaccine uptake in the US and world.

Child survival rose 75% in the last 50 years. Vaccines account for 40% of that. Measles vax alone was 60% of the benefit. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

“One is a quote from the amazing Mariame Kaba, who says, “Hope is a discipline.” She argues that hope is not this nebulous, airy thing. It is a practice that you cultivate through active effort.”
Ed Yong, the Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer, was one of the most trusted journalists covering Covid-19. His immersion in the pandemic left him depleted, and the natural world helped act as a salve to that despair. Read or listen to The Interview. nyti.ms/3CZsyX5

This was my antidote this week and it may be one I keep coming back to. Please read and share so we may all engage in magical thinking.
“Our stories are about how there is actually room for all of us at the table.

Our stories are about how the power of love fares against the love of power.

Our stories are about how there are more of us who believe in care and community than there are fascists.” 💛

If the despots can engage in magical thinking, then so can we
On telling ourselves a story (about our strength, about our capacity for love, about how we're going to win) and then making that story come true

I was looking for something in my H5N1 deck and came across this slide. Look how much H1N1 spread in the US in 2009 compared to other countries in spite of it starting in Mexico. This should have been a warning about our public health failures.

It’s an open secret among medical professionals: Many drugs maintain their ability to combat ailments well after their expiration date. One pharmacist says he sometimes takes home expired OTC medicine so he and his family can use it.

(Published 2017, but there's no expiration date for this story)
The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates
Hospitals and pharmacies are required to toss expired drugs, no matter how expensive or vital. Meanwhile the FDA has long known that many remain safe and potent for years longer.

President Carter was one of a kind. He epitomized service leadership and embodied courage and humility. My friend, Catherine Moore, painted this. I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to hand deliver it while taking Young African Leaders to meet him. RIP, President Carter.
