As critics do, I took a look back on my favorite comics of 2024 and reflected a bit about the year, including how having old eyeglasses affected my reading habits for the year.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

This *really* sucks. Teen Vogue has consistently had some of the best political coverage of the last several years. They are one of the few outlets that met the moment. (Hire these writers!!)
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

This thread is about Evanston, but this has also been going on without reprieve in Elgin, Aurora, and other Chicago suburbs—a metro area of nearly 10 million people.
Some context to the viral videos:

Around 9am Friday, ICE/CBP *encircled* several square miles of a safe suburb and *stormed* it using multiple units.

They were in cars, on foot in alleys & gangways, and in helicopters. They demanded papers, threatened residents, pointed guns, kidnapped people.

I would go with Uncanny X-Men #137. That’s the book that picking it up off the drugstore magazine rack just unlocked something in me that’s never been turned off. There were comics before but that’s a turning point for me.
"This was the book that started it for me."

@christophcondon.bsky.social picks Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier as one of his most influential reads.

What would you pick?

Outside Chicago—

State police and sheriff's officers at Broadview detention center are out in riot gear.

A large Halloween demo is being prevented from doing a Jericho walk through the intersection.

Arrests of protesters ongoing. Troopers have also assaulted multiple reporters already.

I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
The DVD (1996) is now as old as the original 8-inch floppy disk (1967) was when the DVD came out.

There’s a BMW dealership in Schereville with a billboard on I294 that quotes Tombstone— “I’ll be your Huckleberry.”

You’re dying of tuberculosis but will fight Johnny Ringo for me? That’s awfully cool of you, BMW.

Can the Eurythmics or David Bowie save the world? Check out Jason’s Death in Trieste to find out.
“While it seems easy to boil his work down to simple descriptions that frees you to offhandedly quantify and classify his work as something “Jasonesque”, that’s also an abdication of engaging with Jason in any meaningful way.”

Suburbanites are blowing whistles on ICE too. But this whole fucking seige of Chicago is predicated on the hobgoblin image Chicago as the sociological Other, so it's fair to point out the disconnect between that image and the reality you see in videos of ICE raids.

My basic opinion is that it doesn’t involve Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and filling an abandoned nuclear reactor tank with water, this budgetary spike is not justifiable.
President Trump’s new White House ballroom project began Monday, demolishing the East Wing in four days.

The ballroom will almost double the size of the White House and was initially estimated to cost $200 million, but now exceeds $300 million.
How Trump’s ballroom will dwarf the White House
Trump’s new 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom would be almost as large as the rest of the complex.

Reading Kieron Gillen's recent-ish stories and can't help but place them in dialogue with the X-Men.

Wic + Div -> Immortal X-Men-> The Power Fantasy.

But now reading DIE and it's in the realm of Magik's Limbo stories, particularly the original miniseries. And that's not a bad thing.
