My post with just a few of the funniest ladies in silent cinema.

Film discussions pull the tidy trick of declaring rom-coms and flapper pictures to be not "real" comedies, neatly cutting out many of the biggest silent era comediennes.

Was Harold Lloyd not a male flapper? Did Chaplin not romance?
Since we are once again dealing with "the only silent era comedians of note were men" I feel I need to stand up for the ladies.

Marion Davies!

Just describe what something smells like every ten pages and you'll be fine
I reckon this could be a good opportunity-

So, when people say "it reads like a screenplay," it's not that the prose *literally* includes stage directions, directions for line reads, etc.

It's more the flattening, and simplification, of language, designed with the assumption of adaptation...
I’ve only taken one creative writing class where we read novel excerpts and short stories, so I’m not exactly sure what writing like a screenplay even means, but it sounds like it’s be pretty insufferable to read.

Kindle Unlimited has one compensation tier for people who publish directly into it, and another compensation tier for books published elsewhere, and the latter tier looks more like a conventional royalty structure and is not dependent on the monthly "pot" Amazon defines. So for me, it's fine.
Q for @scalzi.com - maybe NDA, but what does Kindle Unlimited look like from the author perspective? Just saw Kaiju Preservation Society is there.

As a huge reader, would love to understand the author pov making the decision.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Yes, and also recognize that with creative fields, survivorship bias is real: You hear about full-time creatives with envious career arcs precisely because they've survived in the field where others (for whatever reason and independent of quality of work) have not. This is an important fact.
Would-be/struggling writers can feel like losers or wannabes when they read about other writers writing "full time" or promo'ing their book in various exotic cities. And it's good to recognize that, yeah, sometimes there's another income (or a spouse is helping to pay the bills).

The CROWN Act is most impactful to Black men and, particularly, Black women who have been discouraged from or marginalized by wearing natural or protective styles at school or work.

top five possibilities for a Ken Burns docuseries:
1) Emperor Norton
2) the Butt Fumble
3) Fleetwood Mac - not just the Nicks/Buckingham years but ALL the crazy stuff
4) The film history of Francis Coleman
5) Failed 19th Century utopian communities in the United States
I figure Ken Burns has one, maybe two big documentary series in him before he fully retires. What do you think they should be? My votes include Football, Hip-Hop, World War 1, Reconstruction (though Skip Gates did this one well), Iraq/Afghanistan, 19th Century Expansionism.

Instead of hiring more immigration judges, the Department of Justice just posted an ad for "deportation judges." join.justice.gov
