A new blood test can now diagnose Alzheimer's disease with very high accuracy.

The P-tau217 test is more accurate than an MRI & as good as an expensive PET scans.

High risk cases can sometimes be predicted 20 years in advance.

Neurotransmitters can act as accelerators (like a gas pedal) or inhibitors (as breaks).

E.g., Glutamate accelerates clear thinking, learning, memory, perception.

GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid) calm things down.

Imbalance of this combo can cause anxiety, mania, panic attacks. #neurotransmitters

Our nerves communicate via electrical signals.....but also through chemical signals, called neurotransmitters.

First neurotransmitter (acetyl-choline) was discovered in 1921, in a dream.

A Nobel prize winning experiment showed chemicals from one frog could stimulate another frog's heart. #dopamine

Mycoplasma genitalium causes STDs that are widespread but difficult to diagnose.

Survey of 6 US urban health clinics in 2020 showed 1-in-6 people were infected.

Because infections are not reportable & often show no symptoms, most remain unaware.

This month marks 20 years since Marshall & Warren received Nobel prize for proving H. pylori was causing certain stomach ulcers.

They faced strong backlash when the idea was first proposed in early 1980s.

Marshall drank a 'cocktail' of bacteria to prove his hypothesis. #hpylori #ulcers #stress

Better hygiene has dramatically reduced H. pylori infections.

For example, data from Japan show a significant drop (from 68% to 5%) in people born within 75 years.

Helicobacter pylori bacteria are known to cause GI problems, e.g., peptic ulcer & gastric cancer.

H. pylori bacteria can cause stomach ulcers.

They can survive the stomach acid, by making ammonia & neutralizing the acid.

Testing for ongoing infection:
- Breath test (13Carbon in urea)
- Stool test (actual bacteria)
- Biopsy & culture
- Blood test (antibodies)

Heart rate measurements are common.

But heart beat rate changes due to many factors: exercise, time-of-the day, season, gender, athleticism, age, etc.

Plot of 24-hour trend shows heart beats the slowest in morning, just at waking up.

Some athletes can be as low as 30 bpm.

The papilloma virus (HPV) looks like a bucky ball with 72 pentagonal 'patches'.

HPV often causes skin bumps (papilloma) or 'acrochordons', a finger-like growth.

Over 175 varieties have been reported so far. Some are known to cause different forms of cancers.

Hormones vs Neurotransmitters

Both are important chemicals to send messages.

Neurotransmitters: fast, local (nerve-to-nerve, nerve-to-muscle).

Hormones: slower, long-distance (in the blood, move across the body).

But some act as both hormones & neurotransmitters.

Most molds are not harmful to healthy humans.

In fact, some are used to make foods or medications, e.g., penicillin.

The 4 most common mycotoxins to humans are:
- ASPERGILLUS (grows on grains)
- PENICILLIUM (on rotting fruits)
- FUSARIUM
- TACHYBOTRYS (black mold)

Testosterone is a good marker of muscle mass & bone density.

That's true for both men & women.

However, levels among women are about 10% of that in men.

It's well known that T-levels drop with age.

But, latest research shows they tend to rise after menopause!

Mpox is caused by an ovoid brick-shape virus from orthopoxvirus family.

Monkeypox is really really small: 0.2 microns, 19kb DNA.

Interestingly, the virus can exist in two distinct forms: outside the cells as enveloped (EV) & inside as mature virus (MV).

Mycoplasma genitalium is one of the most difficult bacteria to detect.

Yet, it infected 3M US adults in 2017-18.

Without a rigid wall, these flask-shaped fastidious creatures are very difficult to grow in a lab & are rapidly becoming antibiotic-resistant.

Infection of herpes virus stays for life.

HSV settles in the nerve cells but keeps growing & sheds for years.

Even after 10 yrs, regular shedding of HSV-2 can happen every 5 days & HSV-1 shedding every 50 days.

Most shedding episodes last 10-20 hrs.

Some interesting facts about Vitamin D:

- Vit D2 is produced by plants & fungi - this is what your supplements often carry.

- Vit D3 is produced in the skin - the active, circulating form in the body.

25-hydroxy vitamin D is what a blood test measures.

Gardnerella or BV (bacterial vaginosis) is common but treatable with a few antibiotics.

It is NOT an STD but caused by imbalance of vaginal bacteria. It doesn't spread from pools, clothing, or toilet sheets.

What causes BV is not fully understood.

Spirochetes (spy-ro-keets) are corkscrew-shaped bacteria, well adapted to human body.

They are nature's 'stealth pathogens' & cause several diseases including Lyme & syphilis.

Their coil-shaped body is well adapted to burrow into bones, joints & blood-brain barrier.

Oregon alone saw 2,150% rise in past 10 years!

Doctors "have limited experience diagnosing syphilis due to its historically low prevalence," says Dr Pete Singson.

The STD syphilis is a 'New World Disease', first observed after Columbus returned back to Europe.

Since 2000 AD, infections have sky-rocketed.

Symptoms are so ordinary that it's very difficult to diagnose without regular testing.

Once tested, it's easy to treat.
